The main reason I purchased this was for a course I was taking, I purchased the eBook so that I could easily search key terms and so forth... However, this book has no page numbers whatsoever so it was extremely challenging to reference in class. Ultimately I had to borrow the traditional paperback from a classmate, so essentially I wasted my money. However, if you are reading this for leisure then please disregard this review.

More than a Mentor

A friend gave me this book as a present. I was rather expecting more of the usual 'feel the fear and do it anyway' self-help guff but The Artist's Mentor really was a revelation. Wonderfully well-researched, helpfully structured quotations tied together thematically by Jackman's non-partisan and clear-headed prose, build into a great little book that's a deal more than a mentor, it's also a handy reference and an absorbing insight into the painterly mind. I am a writer by profession but I found this book fascinating and useful for my own work. An excellent workbook for anyone interested in creative endeavour of all kinds.

This book isn't quite what I expected. That doesn't mean it isn't exactly what it says, just not what I was looking for. It is a book of quotes basically by famous artist throughout history. So if that will inspire you...so will this book.

About the Author

Michael Kimmel is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, State University of New York. A leading researcher and writer on gender and men and masculinity, he is the author of numerous books and articles including The Gendered Society Reader, Fifth Edition (with Amy Aronson, OUP, 2013), Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2009), and Manhood in America: A Cultural History, Third Edition (OUP, 2012).

A great book for any gender class, but wordy

A great book that studies gender for any gender class you may take. My only issue with it was that the author seemed to go into great detail about a study or theory and then he would finish it with, but that's not correct, then launch into another story about another theory. I just felt like it could be slightly condensed to make more sense and make it slightly easier to read.

If you can't trust some of it, can you trust any of it?

It is very clear that the author is ill informed about non-sociology fields that he makes assertions about when it comes to masculinity. Honestly, he shouldn't be discussing gender in literature if he isn't properly educated in it. Of course femininity is discussed when it comes to the Bronte sisters. Their fiction is centered around Victorian femininity. Of course masculinity isn't discussed when we talk about Dickens. His fiction centers around political commentary. But if you talk about Hemingway, Breece D'J O'Brien, or Bram Stoker, you're going to discuss masculinity as much, if not more than you discuss femininity with the Bronte sisters. Kimmel's choice to selectively approach a subject he knows little about (or knows a lot about and decided to unethically use to advance his thesis) does not further the study of gender from a sociological standpoint, but rather hinders understanding of it. Anyone who prints false information that is taught in any classroom should be ashamed of themselves.

About the Author
Monica McGoldrick, LCSW, PhD (h.c.), Director of the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Park, New Jersey, is also Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She was Visiting Professor at Fordham University School of Social Service for 12 years. Ms. McGoldrick received her MSW in 1969 from Smith College School for Social Work, which later granted her one of the few honorary doctorates awarded by the school in its 60-year history. Other awards include the American Family Therapy Academy's award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice. An internationally known author, she speaks widely on culture, class, gender, the family life cycle, and other topics.

Joe Giordano, MSW, is a family therapist in private practice in Bronxville, New York. He was formerly Director of the American Jewish Committee's Center on Ethnicity, Behavior, and Communications, where he conducted pioneering studies on the psychological nature of ethnic identity and group behavior. The author of widely published articles on ethnicity, family, and the media, he served as host of Proud to Be Me, a PBS television program, and as producer of the audio series Growing Up in America.

Nydia Garcia-Preto, LCSW, is cofounder and Clinical Director of the Multicultural Family Institute. She has served as Visiting Professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work and as Director of the Adolescent Day Hospital at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. A noted family therapist, author, teacher, and lecturer, Ms. Garcia-Preto has published and presented widely on Puerto Rican and Latino families, Latinas, ethnic intermarriage, and families with adolescents. She is a highly respected trainer in the areas of cultural competence and organizational team building.

Must Read series!!!! Not a hearts and flowers love story!

I was lucky enough to read an arc early of this book.Like always Yolanda's book kept me engaged from the first word to the very end. I loved this book just as much or even more than the last. this is a dark read there is no flowers and teddy bears. These red light ladies have a story to tell and I am on for the ride. This story deserves every bit of 5 stars if not more, If you haven't read All that Matters first hop to it these books are great!

Crazy amazing! A great addition to this series that leaves you wanting more! The story keeps getting better, but brings a big ol question to the party that will cause you to keep hitting "next page“ for about 5 minutes wanting to know more! But this is a series, so the genius that is miss yolanda leaves you begging for more!

This is the 2nd book in the Red Light Ladies series. This one starts out with Betje & Minnie working at Luuk's brothel & both girls are miserable & miss Lieve/Amity. Kerstan tells Lieve that she was supposed to go to Luuk but that he wants to keep her she tells him she wants her friends back. Meanwhile Luuk has told Betje & Minnie that Kerstan killed Lieve/Amity. I can't wait for the next one I'm pretty sure I know who Luuk really is !

This was really different, but it works :)

I read this book with a certain amount of scepticism - I mean how can exercises help me tighten up an admittedly older face and help me overcome the double chin I have had since birth? Well surprise surprise the techniques in this little book actually work and I am thrilled. It took me a while to see noticeable effects and I am not sure that my husband has noticed yet, but I have and this little book has gone a long way to renewing my self confidence in my aging self. HIghly recommended :)

This book offers about 8 different techniques and what I like most is the simple explanation employed to get you going with them.

The book also offers a few images that help in understanding what exactly you're supposed to do but again the writing is a step-by-step guide so it's pretty much obvious what you're supposed to do.

I just started so I can't say that I've seen results but I'm looking forward to trying out the different techniques.

Unfortuantely I find myself in the group of people that this book appeals to. Fortunately I found this book!

I wasn't sure how effective something so seemingly simple could be, and I have to admit, at first, I felt a bit silly doing the excercises! But I'm happy to report that you really can feel the effect on the muscles after you have done them!

It's early days for me and I believe it will take time and that the key will be consistency for the changes to become really obvious. However in the meantime, because I can feel the tightening within, I already feel better about myself and that can only help me in my quest!

Original translation

The Swiss Family Robinson was initially written in German by Swiss author Johann Wyss in 1812, and then soon after an accurate English translation was completed by William Godwin in 1816. The Godwin translation remained the standard in English for a generation or two, but by the mid-19th century the number and variety of English translations began to multiply - there were no enforceable copyright laws and translators freely added episodes, changed names (and even genders) of some of the characters and cut portions of the text to conform to changing views on education and aesthetic tastes. There are probably over a dozen such variations and most who read the novel today are not reading the original (the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Seelye, is the 1816 Godwin translation, which is the closest to the original). I have now read two: William Kingston's 1879 adaptation (one of the more common adaptations) and Godwin, and I believe the original translation of Wyss by Godwin is better. It's not abridged like most later versions so certain scenes just make more sense - for example some of the characters are more dynamic, like Ernest shows himself to be a capable bloodthirsty killer like his brothers (a scene cut from later editions to maintain his "bookish" nature) - and the theories on education are classic Rousseauian (he is mentioned twice in the narrative).

This isn't your childhood Swiss family. Godwin's 1816 translation has rarely been in print until recently - most versions floating around are some variation of Isabelle de Montolieu's 1824 French adaptation (William H. G. Kingston's 1879 English translation of Montolieu's French adaption is probably the most common). In Montolieu/Kingston's version, the original ~400 page that Wyss wrote has been abridged to about 150 pages, with an additional 150 pages or so of new material added to the end (with an entirely different ending, new characters, etc). So if you've read Swiss family as a child, and are looking for an "unabridged" version, you may find Godwin's 1816 translation missing a lot of material - simply because Wyss never wrote it in the first place.

What version to read? I would say Montolieu/Kingston's version (and others) are more "kid friendly" mainly because the Godwin translation is from 1816 and as such uses some language that is dated and has passages that would probably be boring or not make sense without historical context. So in a way there is no "right" version since most readers for the past 150 years have not been reading the "original" anyway. I would probably recommend the Montolieu/Kingston version for juvenile readers and the Godwin version for adults - or even better, read all of Godwin plus the second half of Montolieu/Kingston which is all new material, the first half just being an abridged version of Godwin.

In the end I enjoyed the novel for what it is - a great adventure and inspiring family story. Many classic stories are challenging and interesting but not always "fun" - this one is just a great story and fun to read. It's even more fun knowing there are is a whole world of alternative versions available, with more adventures and different endings, but I'm glad to have read the original as it was written by Wyss (and his sons).

Still a classic

I first read this book in grade school, went back and read it again in high school, and held it in fond memory every since. Now that I'm seventy, and have a Kindle, I decided to go back and read it again. It is just as good as I remembered. The story of a family who found themselves on a strange island where animals from all over the world live side by side with plants from everywhere may seem unbelievable, but the story really isn't about that. It's about a family working together, laughing together, and building a life together. It's about making the the best of the resources you have available to you and enjoying what comes to you. If you think about it, it's still popular for the same reason The Waltons were popular. Because this is the way we wish our own families could have been. This book will be loved as long as families face hardship and work together to overcome and prosper.

Fascinating over the centuries!

A fantastic story I first read as a youngster. We find the Robinson family back in the 19th century on a sailing ship headed for new lands for settlement. After a terrible hurricane like storm, the family alone survives and are washed ashore. The crew had gone off alone in life boats, abandoning the few passengers ane were never heard from again. A most interesting aspect of the family dynamics involves the formality of addressing one another, the expectations of the parents as to proper behavior and respect for one another. The author obviously had a amazing knowledge of the local flaura and fauna and this knowledge as displayed by 'Father' was instramental in the Robinsons being able to survive. The fact that the ship was nearby and trapped in the rocks gave the family considerable time to return to the wreck and scavenge for a considerable amount of food, tools, weapons, gunpowder, timber, etc. The manner in which the family were able to creatively take advantage of the natural environment and the items from the ship were described in great detail. The survival of a number of farm animals and poultry from the wreck assisted them greatly. For years I have always planned to read this book again and finally got to it. For those recognizing that 'surviving' an array of disasters that will someday befall us,[asteroids, solar storms, mammoth hurricanes, EMPs, etc] this tomb is a must to read.
