Interesting technique

No issues with seller...got book quickly after it was released and in good condition.
The book itself is interesting. I think this may be one of the few books I've seen recently that is a totally difference technique...one I haven't seen before. A cross between jewelry making and stained glass. Interesting and some good instructions...nice pictures to go with instructions. All-in-all very pleased with my purchase.

Loved this book!

Although normally I wouldn't do this, I saw the movie before I read the book. I LOVED the movie, so I was super excited to finally read the book. What I didn't expect was to find it difficult to get past the initial first chapters. As a reader, although I knew what was going to happen (that's the only thing that kept me going at the beginning) I was not invested in the main characters, Emma and Dexter. It was not until the third or fourth chapter that thing's started to really pick up. From there on out it was a wonderful book. It was funny and sad and frustrating and heartbreaking, and you were happy to ride that emotional roller coaster with Emma and Dexter. I'm happy to say that I love the book as much as I do the movie. The author, David Nicholls, really knows the complexities of going from friends to lover, and back to friends again. It's not a relationship that is easy to understand or to explain, but David Nicholls got it right!! Even though the beginning was a bit slow, I can honestly say that I truly loved this book!

About the Author
Rian Hughes is an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator, comic artist, logo designer and typographer. He studied graphic design at the London College of Printing before working for an advertising agency, 'i-D' magazine and a series of record sleeve design companies. In 1994, he founded his own studio, Device, and has since worked with a wide range of international clients in publishing, advertising, music and fashion. He has also worked extensively for the British and American comic book industries, both as artist and designer.

Typopheliacs nirvana!

Not sure why, but I'm addicted to vintage typography, a self proclaimed typoholic. I'm a big fan of the retro modern look, especially from designers like Rian Hughes and Charles S Anderson. This book serves as great inspiration for designers looking to get reference from this era. Providing a wide variety of hand lettered stylings not available anywhere else. This is NOT a clip-art book or a font reference book, there's already too many of those worthless tomes around anyways, but this book shows type in use, words and phrases artfully created by a designers of a gentler era. The hand-crafted quality of vintage type is unmistakable in every sample in the book (and that's a GOOD thing). The book itself attempts to organize the designs by style- serif, sans, script, etc. and is mostly successful, although some designs are so outrageous they defy classification, which is what makes the book so seriously fun to browse. Highly recommended to others that like retro and vintage type.

Interesting resource for 60's and 70's typefaces.

A big thick anthology of typefaces hand-culled from magazines and advertisements of the 1960's and 1970's. Useful to graphic artists who want to recreate that look in their work. Space-age, Beatnik, Psychedelic, late-50's Midcentury-style and others, the samples are categorized by their look and feel. Rian Hughes is British, and truthfully, many of these lettering samples look British to me... ie., many do not look "American" somehow-- rather, "riffs" on American styles then-regnant. but that's the minorest quibble I can imagine. Highly recommended.

Just your type

If you are into type I defy you to open any page in this thick, chunky book and not be grabbed. I would guess that each page has between six and nine examples of custom lettering all sorted into an amazing number of categories. The Contents for the 60s pages have forty-four sections with many sub-divisions: Geometric Sans is further divided into another eight sections. Rian Hughes says in his Intro (rather annoyingly set in six point) that he sorted out his collection of about 10,000 type examples into a hundred definable styles.

Unlike lead set type, with its inflexibility, hand-lettering offered a chance for much more character and immediacy especially for headlines in ads and editorial. Apart from the logos and mastheads in these pages everything else is a one use bit of type and to a certain extent it shows, too. With 4500 examples perhaps a bit more selectivity would have been useful.

I thought it was interesting to compare the same categories in the 60s and 70s. The latter seem much more considered and creative than a lot of the 60s styles. Throughout the two decades designers became much more aware and appreciative of interesting typography, helped off course by the increasing range of styles offered by the graphic arts industry. Why set a headline in lead when so much more choice was available film set.

With so many examples these pages could have looked a mess but instead, despite all the different shapes, it all hangs together beautifully though I thought more color could have been used. The few spreads in color really stand out from hundreds in black only. The matt art paper and good printing gives the book that final finish.

There is another edition by Rian Hughes devoted to 40s and 50s custom lettering. Both books present an interesting cornucopia of type ideas for that next ad campaign or magazine article headline.

Un libro muy sensual y muy erótico, pero con mucho más que ofrecer.

No soy muy aficionado a las novelas romántico-eróticas. Y quedé bastante desengañado del genero con la lectura de "50 sombras de Grey" de E. L. James por lo que dudé un poco cuando me recomendaron este libro. Debo decir que he quedado gratamente impresionado. Afortunamente los defectos que originaron mi rechazo a la trilogía de Grey no se repiten en Paulette Mestre.
Para empezar, aquí tenemos una trama más interesante y con varios giros de acontecimientos, a diferencia de la historia lineal que ofrece James centrada básicamente en el despertar erótico de la señorita Steele, Un argumento algo lineal y sin sorpresas narrativas. Por contra, “La tentación” es una historia compleja que se va devanando poco a poco y que nos ofrece capas y más capas, hasta el mismo final del libro. No ahondó más en ese tema para no caer en spoilers.
Ni que decir que el personaje femenino principal es fascinante y provocativo, en cierto modo lleva la historia y no se deja llevar por la historia, como ocurre con otras obras que actúan con la convención comercial del género erótico. Es una chica atrevida, arriesgada, a veces quizás irresponsable. Sus acciones la perfilan ante el lector. El personaje le sale redondo a la autora.
Y si nos quedamos a examinar solamente lo estrictamente relacionado con el tema erotico, la autora Mestre se atreve a más. Si se busca un libro que encienda la hoguera sensual y erótica, pues este libro es el adecuado. A mí me dejo particularmente impresionado una escena, casi al final de la obra en cierto restaurante, muy candente. Es el plato fuerte de la narración. De nuevo, no quiero caer en spoilers, pero sí aseguró que esta escena, y otras, dejarán satisfecho al público amante de la ficción erótica.
Pero como ya dije, “La tentación” es más que una novela romántico erótica, es una historia de traiciones, de decepciones, y también tiene un fuerte componente de intriga y misterio. Así que no sería justo compararla con otra obra existente en el mercado. Es una obra de ficción, propiamente caracterizada.
Debo señalar que la autora destaca en la narración, sabe llevar la historia y ha construido un libro que empieza bien y termina bien, el prólogo es realmente impactante y el epílogo nos invita a querer más; la situación final me dejó con la expectativa y las ganas de saber más de los personajes y la historia que viene con ellos. Ha sido un grato inicio de saga y creo que leeré las demás novelas que la componen.
No hay que olvidar el estilo limpio y cuidado de Mestre, no encontraremos aquí los lugares comunes y las constantes repeticiones de frases que en la obra de James son frecuentes (no se me olvida las veces que la frase “la diosa que llevo dentro” se repite en James), Mestre ha hecho la tarea básica de un escritor, cuidar que la narración fluya sin tropiezos sin errores en la redacción.
Esperemos que esta autora nueva siga escribiendo, talento no le falta y tiene pasión por la narración.

Una tentacion entretenida

Pensé por el título que este sería un libro de uno de los cuatro ‘Brothers” pero no, esta es la historia de Claire y Marco. Una primera parte que se queda sin un final y sin aclarar todos los secretos del protagonista. Me parece que tiene algunas similitudes a Extasis de Maya Banks pero (siempre hay un pero) la escritora de forma magistral nos va dando a cuenta gotas los secretos de la historia sorprendiéndonos a cada paso. Lo que mantiene al lector entretenido y queriendo saber más. Inclusive la verdadera personalidad de Marco no parece hasta casi la mitad de la historia y en todo este tiempo la escritora supo ocultarlo muy bien para sorprender al lector. A pesar de ser la típica historia del hombre controlador obsesionado con la chica sumisa la escritora integra en la historia elementos sorpresa que la hacen diferente.
A pesar que la escritora es muy buena, buena narrativa y coherente me pareció que algunos casos las descripciones de lugares, ropa o comida fueron muy prolongadas cuando realmente queremos saber de los protagonistas. El erotismo está bien trabajado y no lo encontré excesivo. Inclusive la primera escena que sorprende por la diferencia de edades, muy bien lograda. Tiene muchos errores tipográficos e inclusive intercambio de nombres. Hay un personaje que lo llaman Alfonso y Alfredo en la misma parte. Deben revisarla. Al final tengo que decir que es interesante, entretenida, si le gustan estas historias llenas de erotismo con un protagonista torturado por un pasado que no sabemos esta es su historia.

Great Resource!

I liked that there was a mixture of informal and formal assessments to use. I think written answers always show what a student understands the most and prefer it over multiple-choice. The great thing about some of the work was it was a mixture in one set: true/false, sequential order, and open-ended questions that required a complete, well thought-out answers.

'Why a book about spirituality for architecture readers that does not focus primarily on religious buildings? The thesis presented here is provocative: spirituality is a dimension of the world, not only or always of organized religions and their spatial accommodation and representation. The old sense of the spiritual or transcendent as "beyond" the everyday won't work anymore. Grasping spirituality today requires attention to both organized religions and seemingly prosaic conditions: streets, some full of activity, others empty; also buildings, some marvelously complete, others in ruin; and much more. Although the book's five parts - ontological, historical, representational, topographical, and practical - are grounded by philosophical questioning, they also address contemporary design practice. About the Author
Thomas Barrie AIA is a Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on alternative histories of architecture and, in particular, the interrelationship of a culture’s architecture, its cultural/religious beliefs and its socio-political, doctrinal and ritual agendas. His research has brought him to sacred sites around the world and he has published numerous articles and lectured extensively on his subject area. He is the author of The Sacred In-Between: The Mediating Roles of Architecture (Routledge, 2010) and Spiritual Path, Sacred Place: Myth Ritual and Meaning in Architecture (Shambhala, 1996). Julio Bermudez is an Associate Professor at the Catholic University of America School of Architecture and Planning where he directs the Sacred Space and Cultural Studies graduate concentration. He holds a Master of Architecture and a Ph.D. in Education degrees from the University of Minnesota. His expertise covers architectural phenomenology and the relationship between architecture, culture and spirituality. Bermudez has widely lectured, led symposia, and published in these areas. His current research includes a fMRI study of architecturally induced contemplative states and a large survey on profound experiences of place. His book Transcending Architecture published by CUA Press was released in Winter 2015. He co-founded the Forum for Architecture, Culture and Spirituality in 2007. Bermudez has received many recognitions including the 1998 AIA Education Honors Award, the 2004-05 ACSA Creative Achievement Award, the 2005 Premio Trayectoria Creativa Arturo Montagu (by SIGraDI, Latin America), and the 2010 Sasada Award (by CAADRIA, Asia). Phillip Tabb is Professor of Architecture at Texas A&M University where he is the holder of the Liz and Nelson Mitchell Professor of Residential Design. He served as Head of the Department from 2001-2005, and was Director of the School of Architecture and Construction Management at Washington St
