North American P-51 Mustang--Owner's Workshop Manual

I was quite disappointed when I received the book. I was expecting something more along the lines of the Haynes car manuals. Cutaways, assembly instructions, specifications, etc. This book has numerous photos of a restored P-51 but not to anything near original.

If you just want photos of a P-51, it's fine. If you want lots of details for building an accurate model, save your money.

A Mixed Bag

I've really come to love Haynes' "workshop manuals." They're great books for anyone seriously interested in learning more about the inner workings of historic vehicles, modern-day restoration, and insights into everyday maintenance and use.

That said, this entry in the series is kind of underwhelming. There's a few nice overview diagrams of the aircraft's systems, but as a whole it's lacking in detail. The book seems to take a broad look at the P-51, never really going into the same level of detail many other Haynes titles provide. The sections on the aircraft's anatomy, flying qualities, and maintenance are awfully basic, compared to the Haynes books on the F-86 and Spitfire, to give two examples. Many important aircraft systems are skimmed over in a couple paragraphs, while the section on post-war racing Mustangs goes on for eight pages.

There are plenty of nice photographs, including a nicely done photographic essay on the restoration of P-51D 44-13521 "Marinell," and the stories of wartime P-51 pilots were interesting to read. The checklists at the end, showing every step of a 25-hour and 100-hour inspection, demonstrate how much work it takes to keep a high-performance military aircraft flying. And you thought changing your car's oil was a pain! This book would makes a nice introduction to the type, but kind of falls short as a technical study. Don't go in expecting exploded views of propeller pitch mechanisms, close-ups of the undercarriage locking pins, or diagrams showing the locations of lubricating points, and you might enjoy it.

P-51 Book...Not What It Seems!

Jarrod Cotter and Maurice Hammond's NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG, 1940 ONWARDS (ALL MARKS) is supposed to be part of Haynes Publications' OWNERS' WORKSHOP MANUAL series. I say 'supposedly' because it doesn't match up with other Haynes airplane manuals I've seen in the series Nor does it really merit its sub-title: AN INSIGHT INTO OWNING, RESTORING, SERVICING AND FLYING AMERICA'S CLASSIC WORLD WAR II FIGHTER.

In reality this 2010 Haynes Publishing release is more a general history of the P-51 with sections on development, combat ops, aircraft structure and systems, pilots' impressions, etc.

Cotter and Hammond's book is entertaining and informative but it's more an overview of North American's legendary fighter than a guide to owning and operating a P-51. Your call, folks.

Text book for what we don't know about sex.

I don't buy many such books, but after reading some reviews decided to try this one. It appeared promptly when ordered and was in perfect condition. The book is very well and tastefully illustrated, with a refreshing and modern perspective on a difficult and sometimes taboo subject matter. I also like that the book is clear about the possible dangers of some of these activities whilst being descriptive enough to educate most people I imagine. This is definately not an "idiots guide" and is thoughtfully and professionally presented. I would say this may become a classic text book guide to the things most people don't know about sex. Excellent publication, and pardon the pun - but 100% satisfied!

The Whole Story (Abridged)

As a child, I grew to love Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. But I also fond it frustrating. Why was the end of the story of Tristan and Palamedes missing? Why did the Roman War not seem to have existed after that book? What was the questing beast? Why were there two differing accounts of how the Fisher King was maimed?

I read comments, but the commentators seemed, to me, to be amazingly uninterested in such questions. They would explain that Malory alone had first made one book out of the many Arthurian books, but I sometimes wondered if they had even read this one book.

Of course, eventually I discovered the old French romances in the University Library, and taught myself to read Old French to some degree. And, I discovered why Malory was so good, but also discovered all the missing parts which Malory didn't put into his tale. I found out who Galahaut the High Prince was, discovered the story of Guinglain son of Gawain, and read the account in the Prose Tristan about Tristan and the Land of Servage, which was so much superior to Malory's poor efforts.

Best of all, was Oskar Sommer's Vulgate Arthurian Cycle, in 8 enormous bound volumes as thick as phone books, providing secret lore concerning Lancelot and his kin.

Then in 1196 the final volume of Norris J. Lacy's Lancelot-Graal appeared, the conclusion of a translation into modern English of seven of Sommer's eight volumes, plus a translation of the remnant of the Post-Vulgate, a modified cycle which now existed only in fragments, but which told such major Athurian events as the death of King Lot, the death of the Queen of Orkney, and the death of King Pellinore, the Christening of Sir Palamedes, and the final end of the Questing Beast.

Unfortunately this immense series of books was out of print for years, not because of demand, which if anything has increased, but because of unaccountable lack of interest by the publisher in either putting out another printing of the books themselves or assigning rights to an eager paperback company.

However, a selection of material from the Lacy Lancelot-Grail volumes is still in print, in The Lancelot-Grail reader. The selections are knitted together by short summaries of the missing parts, and there is more missed than presented.

That creates a delightful tension. One knows one is missing material. Most of the material dropped makes sense, though I do wish Lacy had kept the account of Mordred for the first time learning who is true father is. But this is very much a "good parts" book, as William Goldman described his Princess Bride. If you want to get the gist of most of the full Lancelot version of the Arthurian legend, and read the best of it, then this is the book.

The book ends with an appendix of some Post-Vulgate material, exactly that material which in my opinion is most important in the Post-Vulgate.

About the Author

Radhika Ranjan Roy is an electronics engineer, US Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command (RDECOM), Communications–Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center (CERDEC), Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate (S&TCD) Laboratories, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Maryland, since 2009. Before joining to US Army Research, he worked in various capacities in CACI, SAIC, AT&T/Bell Laboratories, CSC, and PDB since his graduation. He earned his PhD in electrical engineering with major in computer communications from the City University of New York, New York, in 1984, and MS in electrical engineering from the Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1978. He received his BS in electrical engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1967. He has published more than 50 technical papers. He is holding and/or submitted over 30 patents. He authored a book titled Handbook of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks on Mobility Models in 2010.

THE LAST DANCE? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!

This latest release from the golden pen of Australian Fiction is about a young lady (Stella Myles), who is down on her luck in more ways than one. The book opens with a funeral, and by the end of chapter two we know her story, her family and her background. You may just find yourself completely in love with the brave young woman. The events transcribed in this chapter may well shock you, and there is no doubt the rising young starlet has had a bad life, but with the Gods of Fate shining a little ray of sunshine onto the overcast day Ms Myles calls her life, the reader may well feel justified in thinking some aspects are soon to improve. And they are. She is offered a job as a Governess to a wealthy family in Sussex, England, but as sure as day follows night, we learn that nothing is what it seems and her life is about to change in ways she (and the reader) have not even dreamed of.

The writing is fast and fluid, and features chapter ending hooks which are guaranteed to make the reader not want to put the story down. Marathon reading sessions are almost guaranteed, but (obviously) these are not recommended if you are experiencing this fine tome on the daily commute to, and from, work. The chapter lengths, as Walt Disney would say, are “just right” - that is, not too long, and not too short. But packed full of just the right level of information, emotion, and as I have just said, cliff hanger endings that maximises readers’ enjoyment levels.

It turns out that Stella and her new employers are soon (ish) off to Morocco and surrounds, and with personality clashes, love affairs and less than wholesome character motivations, things couldn’t get any worse for our heroine.

But they do.

I won’t reveal here what happens (it’s not my place) but rest assured that your heart rate will rise just as surely and just as swiftly as the action does in the book.

This is yet another strong release from this world class writer. I hereby award THE LAST DANCE a very encouraging four stars. Keep watching this space for updates as I progress through the story. I would not be surprised, given the heritage and talents of this authoress, if I end up giving it full marks.

An intriguing story of family secrets and deception

This is an enjoyable and intriguing story by talented author Australian author Fiona McIntosh set in 1930's England. Stella, an impoverished but well educated young woman takes a job as a French/Piano governess/tutor to support her much younger brother and sister.

It all starts with a chance meeting with an unusual man at a Piccadilly ballroom who orchestrates a job with the wealthy but strange Ainsworth family at their huge home in Sussex. While Douglas Ainsworth welcomes her, his wife and teenage daughter don't want her help. Slowly Stella learns something about the family secrets and more about the world of the mysterious Douglas.

Things come to a head when Douglas decides to take his whole family and Stella on a cruise calling at North Africa, Egypt and the Holy Land leading to two unexpected endings.

Both Suncoast and Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed this book. Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed Fiona McIntosh's previous book Nightingaleand considered that this one is as good if not better. Mrs Suncoast gave this book 5 stars, Suncoast gave it 4.5 stars as it is not his normal genre.
