Brilliant and Necessary

This is, of course, a book about Japan and Japanese attitudes

toward birth, death and the fragility of life. Because it is

also a book about abortion, it also touches on an issue that

is incredibly hot in America even as abortion has become

an uncontroversial fact of life in most of the rest of the

world.

So it is a tribute to the author's scholarship as well as to

the scope of his world view that he stays true to the business

of explaining a Japanese Buddhist take on the world without

overtly indulging in taking sides in the American controversy.

It' a tribute to his depth of understanding that in spite of

this lack of partisanship, this splendid book has something to

teach us all and some light to shed on the American debate.

It would oversimplify LaFleur's arguement to sum it up, but one

thread is something like this. The Japanese view of a newborn

is that it is a potential life. This view is even more emphatic

in the case of an unborn-a foetus. People become people in

this view by a gradual process of socialization.

Rather than being heartless, this way of looking at things has

a great deal to recommend it-especially in days when infant

mortality was high. Parents who lost a new-born or an unborn

child could pray for the return of that child in a subsequent

pregnancy. The ritual system, which provided no funeral for

one who died so young, affirmed the tentative nature of the

dead one's membership in the human community.

If it takes socialization to make a human and a family to make

socialization, then it is also up to the community and the

family to decide if that's going to happen at all. In this

view, life in infancy is a liquid that hardens into indiv-

iduality with time.

So infant death and miscarriage are sad, but not final. The

unborn child gets to come around again, maybe with better karma.

This, of course, removes abortion from the realm of murder/

choice. It also forces all of us to see our various positons

in the American debate as products of our social and religious

assumptions just as the Japanese view is the product of theirs.

Again, this is not a book about the American abortion wars.

It is instead, a splendid book about Japanese religious beliefs

across a swath of history and how they affect attitudes. By

staying true to his topic, LaFleur teaches us a great deal.

Not just a book about Japan...

William R. LaFleur gives us a book which is well made. Piece by piece Mr. LaFleur goes over the history of abortion, buddhism, family planning, sexuality attitudes and even woman's lib in Japan. By the time he reaches his conclusion, you can't help but feel like you, yourself, have also researched and processed all the information.
Near the end, when he compares the Japanese ideas to American ideas on the issue, you can't help but feel that maybe it was all a well placed trap, to get you to look at the whole mess from a different point of view, not just the pro-life/pro-choice, good/bad, yes/no, on/off American way (where every issue only has two sides and the winner gets total victory, so no mercy!)
You might not like some of the points made, but it will sure force you to think.

An Excellent Book, Well Written and Well Researched

I can heartily recommend this book. I once took a course taught by LaFleur which was one of the best courses on understanding Japanese Buddhism and the practice of abortion. This book matches his good lecturing style.
What is interesting is that in the West abortion is viewed in primarily negative terms, as is infanticide. LaFleur's initial attitude was: How can Japanese engage in this kind of activity on such a large scale? What role does belief in reincarnation (according to Buddhism) play?
Rather than bringing in Western moral preconceptions that might prejudge his discussion, LaFleur treats this sensitive topic with great insight and sensitivity. This book will be a very interesting read for those interested in Japanese society and Buddhism.

I have for some time wondered how to combine my two main interests in life, exercise and cats. This book has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities. Blind Melon is my favorite band, and this book tells the whole story. From the beginning to the tragic end of Shannon Hoon's life. The interviews are interesting & the history of the band is complete. A great read for anyone who loves music.

I opened this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. It truly does tell the story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon, and tells it in the best possibly way; from the mouths of the people that lived it. The story is told in a series of quotes from band members, record company people, family and friends obtained through interviews by the author. And in the case of Hoon, the quotes were taken from published interviews from the 90's. There could no be no purer way for this story to be told. The interviewees were candid and open; they seemed to hold nothing back. Their words and stories spoke so clearly of those times and what Shannon Hoon meant to them that I truly felt that I got to know him and his tendencies through this book. I felt as if I truly had spent those hours not reading a book, but spending time with these people and their friend Shannon. Which made for emotional results even though I knew the end to this story. When the fateful end of Shannon Hoon's life came in this book I immediately felt the loss of him. My heart broke, and I missed him. Just from reading a book 13 and a half years after the event. I do not have the book in front of me as I review it, but someone in there said something along the lines of "everyone who met him thought Shannon was their best friend" and it was easy to see that.

As Shannon Hoon had the most powerful personality of the subjects in the book, and people seemed to speak most about their relationship with him, it is easy to focus on him. But through the honesty of Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn, Brad Smith, and Glen Graham you felt closer to them as well. They give valuable details of life in the band Blind Melon, everything from stories from the road to recollections of recording and some song meanings. A casual rock and roll fan will see from this book that Blind Melon was a band, and not just Shannon Hoon.

Your heart really goes out to the people that were close to Shannon Hoon. People whose lives were touched very deeply for knowing him, and who had to deal with the pain of losing him. I extend gratitude to those willing to speak about those times for this project, and credit to the author for the Shannon Hoon quotes he chose to give the singer's perspective of that time in his life with his band. Strongest recommendation for anyone that is a fan of 90's music, and this is a flat out must read for any Blind Melon fan.

Great for Care Plans

Before buying a Care Plan book, I went to a local bookstore and reviewed about 15 books. This one was by far the best one for me. You can look up by the Nursing Diagnosis Care or a specific disease and find your Care Plan. Listed are Subjective and Objective results, Risk Factors, Desired Outcomes, Nursing Assessment and it's rationale and lastly, therapeutic nursing interventions and their rationale. This book was $56 at B&N, but I was able to get one slightly used for just $26. Well worth the investment. Coincidentally, it is the same book that is recommended by my Nursing Program.

I just received this and used it for 2 care plans - I have about 5 care plan books and this one is the best - it is set up by NANDA diagnosis as well as another section by illness - it has good patho reasons for the interventions - it's not only useful for writing a care plan but it would be useful to use at clinical rotation.

The E-book is TERRIBLE!! Its missing whole chapters! I have the hard copy and compared it to the Kindle version, its not right at all, very difficult to use too. If you're thinking about purchasing this book, stick with the hard copy! (which is GREAT)

This book is incredible it is dated but revels some of the secrets of Madison ave. I do not think this book is a hoax in fact I think such advertising methods have become worse.

Mr. Key claims subliminal sexual symbols (and images of death) or objects are often used to entice consumers to buy and use various products.

Subliminal messages bypass conscious recognition.

Subliminal Embedding

"One prevalent form of subliminal technique (Subliminal Embedding)

Interesting Read, and very true

I read this book when I was about 12 years old, and I found it very intersting. The book shows blown up images of items used in commercials, etc. Shocking how advertisers play to the lowest common denominator (sex) in order to sell their products! After reading the book, I started looking for the little tricks advertisers use that our subconscious mind does pick up on. I remember sitting there with my mouth opened just amazed by it all. I'd love to read it again as an adult. I think it would be more interesting this time around. If you don't believe in the concept of subliminal seduction, you will after reading this book.
