Fun books

I own most of Schaum's books (I am a math geek). I don't play video games, I do math and strategy puzzles. I can keep them on my Kindle to read or solve the problems.

These books are good basic primers on a moderate skill level. They explain the process by which to obtain the desired result and provide answers to the problems. The videos aren't bad ... they're actually ok.

The ebooks do well on my Samsung Galaxy 3, my Chromebook, my Fire and my Paperwhite. You cannot do the videos on the Paperwhites.

The Devil's Arguments, In His Own Language

In the forward to this remarkable book Milosz writes that he wants to give the totalitarian point of view "in his own words, from his own point of view." The result is this ambitious, fascinating tour of the human mind twisted by the lies of the culture that surroundes it. It's a schizophrenic place that resembles the scarier novels of the noir writer Jim Thompson. There's nothing solid to cling to; everything dissolves into fear and loathing. Milosz turns his poetical gifts to the case studies of several Polish intellectuals who became entangled with the Communist party. Milosz doesn't name them but one is clearly Tadeusz Borowski, the author of the Holocaust short story collection "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen." The title of that book in Polish was "The Stony World", which reflected how Borowski, an Auschwitz survivor, came to see the world--as dominated by force, without effective moral constraint. About the Author
John Ryan was born in Edinburgh and spent his early childhood in the U.K. and Morocco before moving back to England, where he worked for seven years as Assistant Art Master of Harrow School. Captain Pugwash first set sail over 50 years ago as a strip cartoon. Since then he has featured in books, films and theatres all over the world. Before his death in 2009 aged 88, Ryan lived in Rye, Sussex, the home of smugglers in years gone by, with his wife Priscilla, who is also an artist. He has three children and a regular crew of grandchildren.

About the Author
Dr. B V Kumar is currently the Director at Altius, Inc and is responsible for delivering technology-based services for corporate clients. Dr. Kumar has a Master's degree in technology from The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and a Ph.D. from The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He has over 22 years of experience in the field of information technology at various levels and in organizations such as Computer Vision Corporation (Singapore), Parametric Technologies (Seoul, S. Korea), Sun Microsystems (India) and Infosys Technologies Ltd. Prior to initiating Altius Inc, Dr. Kumar was the Director and Chief Architect at the Global Technology Office of Cognizant Technology Solutions (India). He has been working on enterprise technology solutions for more than 12 years, particularly focusing on Java, JEE, web services, service oriented architecture and open source technologies. He has also been working on content management systems through applications such as Joomla and Drupal, and mobile platforms such as Android and iPhone. About the Author
Anu Singh-Cundy received her PhD from Cornell University and did post-doctoral research in cell and molecular biology at Penn State. She is an associate professor at Western Washington University, where she teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, including organismal biology, cell biology, plant developmental biology, and plant biochemistry. She has taught introductory biology to non-majors for over 15 years and is recognized for pedagogical innovations that communicate biological principles in a manner that engages the non-science student and emphasizes the relevance of biology in everyday life. Her research focuses on cell-cell communication in plants, especially self-incompatibility and other pollen-pistil interactions. She has published over a dozen research articles and has received several awards and grants, including a grant from the National Science Foundation.

After earning a degree in English literature at UC Berkeley, Gary Shin turned his academic sites toward biology, first working as a field biologist and then moving into the lab to study population genetics. He earned his PhD at UCLA, studying the evolutionary genetics of viruses. Dr. Shin has worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and now teaches general biology at California State University, Long Beach, sharing his passion for biology with nonmajors.

Not a Good Textbook

I do not dislike this book just because it's a book on biology, and I'm a more than decent student pulling down a 4.0 GPA. Having said that, this book sucks and I intend to make a plea to the dean so that the college obtains a different book/publisher in the future so that other students can have a text that really teaches. I cannot enumerate the number of times that I have needed to go out to Kahn Academy and watch a video from Sal Kahn, or some other person, describe a process in simple-to-grasp terms that the two authors of this textbook made so difficult to understand. I mention the publisher herein, too, as they pretty much suck as well. In addition to renting this book, I purchased the full online access (text plus ancillary platforms) hoping to get at least get sample quizzes and tests to take. SO not what was needed or expected. Textbooks are not cheap. Those tasked with sourcing them for colleges and universities must do a better job. After all, it's only science-based education!

Lots of techniques, photos & clear instructions

Roni Johnson doesn't have any product to sell which means she can concentrate on writing a great book which focuses purely on ideas and techniques. You will take away from this book literally hundreds of ideas/skills which you can transfer across many arts and crafts from collage to scrapbooking, card making, altered art and beyond!
One of my favourite things about this book is that it brings so many techniques together in one place, things that I have come across on the internet and in books and have, no doubt, bookmarked and intended to come back to but never did.
Roni has included concise supplies lists and instructions which make replicating the techniques very easy. The techniques range from easy to more complicated and some may be completed with just some basic supplies- so you don't read the book and feel like you need to go buy out your local art supply store! There are also well written descriptions of some supplies and their various uses- very handy to have.
I got this book from my local library and was only pages in before I knew I had to own it. I ordered it within days so I didn't have to be without it! I feel that this book is limitless- the art within it and the techniques are timeless. While other books of a similar type will eventually go out of fashion- this is a book you will never want to part with and will return to again and again.
After I read the book I emailed Roni to let her know how much I enjoyed the book and she said she had about 3 times as much stuff as her publisher let her put in the book- I can't wait!

Excellent Book!

I LOVE this book. I have been following Roni's blog for some time, so I know how talented she is. This book is packed with excellent ideas and tutorials. The tutorials have full color pictures that really help you understand the instructions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out in collage/altered art or who wants to add some great techniques to their art!!

Easy To Understand

I love this book! The photos are clear, the directions are very easy to follow. This is a must have book for those looking to venture out from just scrapbooking or card making. The author gives lots of tips and the gallery will get your creative juices flowing.
