About the Author
Shel Silverstein is best known as a children's-book author who wrote and illustrated a number of bestselling books that have charmed millions of readers of all ages. Crossing many artistic boundaries, he was also a noted songwriter and an accomplshed playwright. Silverstein first came to prominence in the 1950s as a cartoonist for Playboy, where he assumed the role of roving ambassador for the up-and-coming magazine. This esteemed assignment -- due in no small part to his friendship with Hugh M. Hefner -- was the auspicious beginning of a most amazing career. Shel Silverstein died in 1999.

3 grandchildren can't be wrong!

Our 6 year old grandson then a boy/girl set of 31/2 year olds think this is the funniest book ever! Now I have to buy one for our other 3 year old granddaghter. Syd is my giggler . . . . she also loves Todd Parr books . . . bright colors . . .few words on each page . . giggle, giggle, giggle. I know Shel has left us, but such a great legacy he gives to our grand children. As a grandparent, I can think of nothing better than to teach our children to read & appreciate good books. Thank you to all you writers, artists & publishers . . . and especially Amazon for your easy distribution.

About the Author

Professor Alastair V. Campbell is Chen Su Lan Centennial Professor and Director of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics at the National University of Singapore. He is founding editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics and a past President of the International Association of Bioethics as well as the author of ten books and numerous articles in the field. He is also an elected Fellow of The Hastings Center, New York, an Honorary Vice-President of the Institute of Medical Ethics, UK and a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Great book!

After reading this book in its entirety, I chose this book for my capstone biomedical engineering course. The book reads like a novel in a straight forward, thorough, and easy to comprehend fashion. I particularly like the relevant and challenging ethical dilemmas the book poses which made me think for a while about what to do and will provide for some interesting class discussions.

The gears start spinning at the Hacienda Inn and Spa in Santa Fe, where three very different women have come to escape the various stresses of their everyday lives. Carol McCabe has left her cheating husband Jack and is determined finally to become the artist she has always felt she could be. Beautiful Tessa Andersen has just been widowed by what appeared to be her wealthy (but actually secretly bankrupt) husband's suicide and must care for eight-year-old daughter Camille. Rachel Richardson, devastatingly successful television personality, is tired of life in the fast lane alone: Her marriage proposal from media mogul Matt Harding leaves her cold, but she is on the verge of succumbing if only to acquire the children and family she so desperately craves. When the three women meet at dinner, something clicks and continues to do so even when the idyllic five-day retreat comes to an end. Not what I expected!

Pat Booth's new book "Marry Me" is not like her previous books.
I expected it to contain adult contents. I am only half way
through but I can't put it down. If only I had all the time
in the world I could finish it in one sitting. It always
upsets me when I have to put it down.
Definitly a page turner.

I bought this from my bookclub and hoped it was a steamy novel like the rest of her books. It wasn't, but it was superb in a different way. These three women in the book will win your heart from the start. Don't hesitate, this one's a keeper!

About the Author
Michigan native Lawrence (Larry) Connor departed Michigan State University upon completion of his Ph.D. dissertation on strawberry pollination when he assumed the position of extension apicultural entomologist at The Ohio State University (Columbus). He established Genetic Systems, Inc., Dadant Starline and Midnite hybrid queen program to Florida. In 1980 he formed a private educational firm and has worked as a publisher of bee books since 1988, having edited and published 15 titles and 3 beekeeping journals. He co-edited Asian Apiculture and Beekeeping in the 21st Century. He is the author of many slide sets, magazine articles, a video series, and Increase Essentials (2006). A monthly contributor to Bee Culture Magazine, Connor is the sole owner of Wicwas Press. He continues his work in bee photography and lecturing on apicultural subjects.

Great for second year in beekeeping

I don't think this would have been of interest to me last year, but I'm in my second year of beekeeping and this book is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to learn how to make nucs and splits from my own hives so I can go into winter with extra bees instead of ordering package bees in spring to replace deadouts. I had been gathering information from other books and the Beesource forums, but this book is much more comprehensive. I think that the information in this book will help me improve my stock and become a better beekeeper.

Seeking Wisdom as a Life Strategy

My Father was an executive with a major corporation and he told me as he was moving up in the company, an executive who was a key player in the company, on occasion would have a problem and he would need "fresh" perspective on what he was working on. He would call my Father and my father was aware there was a group of 5 others this man would call (they did not know the identity of the others) and ask for their perspective. He would take their perspectives and use them to examine and create a solution that he didn't have before he had called them or wasn't comfortable with yet.

The Genius of this program is tapping the Wisdom of Solomon, through the eyes, understanding and experiences of Steven K. Scott, an experienced businessman. As a businessman, I have seen the importance of what it cost me in real loss in peace of mind for my family and me, and also the financial costs that we experienced because I had not yet learned these lessons. For anyyone who has wished they had someone who they could trust, who could teach them about the important lessons of how to live a more fulfilling life, this is a great resource. Using Proverbs as a foundation, and real life stories to illustrate and breathe life into examples, Steven K. Scott has made a significant contribution. In 1962 George Martin reluctantly signed a young group called the Beatles to the EMI record label. Thus began his stint as record producer for one of the most groundbreaking bands in pop history. With Pearson's help, Martin focuses on the making of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the landmark 1967 album that--with its exotic instruments, innovative recording techniques, and sophisticated songwriting--opened new possibilities for rock music and also captured its era's zeitgeist like few works of any kind before or since. Amid a detailed, song-by-song account of the recording of "the virtuoso music collage that is Pepper," Martin recalls his first meeting with the Beatles at their 1962 audition, discusses the band's musical influences, traces its members' rapid progress from makers of simple pop songs to composers of intricate art music, and confirms or denies many established bits of Beatles lore. One of the best books ever written about the Beatles

This fascinating, thorough, and accurate book about the making of the Sgt. Pepper album is the U.S. edition of Martin's Summer Of Love. It's the same book: same text, same photos, different title. Martin did a tremendous job researching this book, combining his and others' enjoyable first-hand recollections about the making of the album with extensive research at the EMI studios, relistening to the session tapes (including the unreleased alternate takes), checking the detailed notes written on the original session sheets, and so on. (In contrast, for All You Need Is Ears all those years ago, he relied on his memory, and the results were much less complete.) Amazingly, this was the first Beatles book to reveal that Paul McCartney played lead guitar on the "Sgt. Pepper" title track (yes, he sure did), and also the first to thoroughly dispel the tired myth that "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was "all John": it was a true cocomposition by John AND Paul (as John said himself in at least two interviews). It's refreshing to see a book like this that assumes the TRUTH will be "good enough" entertainment for any sensible reader. Martin, thankfully, simply ignores rock writers' relentless post-Lennon rewriting of Beatles history, which has magnified anything negative Lennon ever said about McCartney while ignoring anything positive (such as Lennon's praise of "When I'm Sixty-Four" to interviewer Anne Nightingale)... and has consistently seized on Lennon's MOST mistakenly exaggerated or misleading claims about his own role in the creation of songs, while "forgetting" about all the many times John happened to give Paul completely fair, due credit (such as his 1965 interview with Valerie Wilmer, in which he described "Ticket To Ride"'s melody as cowritten by McCartney). George Martin, who admired and liked both Lennon and McCartney, has no axe to grind about them, or the other two Beatles... and he finds the right balance of modesty and candor in describing his own important role in the creation of this album, too. The previously unseen session photos are a fine bonus. This book is a keeper.

A Treasure

I'm pretty surprised about the few people here who have actually bashed this book. As a big Beatle fan and one who's read tons of books about them, I don't recall any inconsistancy's in this book whatsoever. Though short, this is probably one of the most prized Beatle books in my collection. My only complaint is I wish George Martin would do the same thing he's done here with Sgt. Pepper and write books about the sessions for the White Album, Revolver and Abby Rd. : ) A treasure to own. A book to read and re-read over and over.

Musicians take note!

For fans of pop music history, and especially for those interested in recording science, this book is a must read. George Martin, the Beatles' producer, tells the detailed account of how the group's most famous album was created, from the beginning creative germs to the cover art.
For those in the recording industry, Martin's detailed explanations of how he created some of the now-famous effects on that album, at a time when recording science was still somewhat primitive, is quite interesting.
If you don't like the Beatles' music, you probably won't be able to sit through the sometimes technical recording talk, but anyone for whom the Beatles marked the culture of their youth should find it fascinating.

Brilliant and Necessary

This is, of course, a book about Japan and Japanese attitudes

toward birth, death and the fragility of life. Because it is

also a book about abortion, it also touches on an issue that

is incredibly hot in America even as abortion has become

an uncontroversial fact of life in most of the rest of the

world.

So it is a tribute to the author's scholarship as well as to

the scope of his world view that he stays true to the business

of explaining a Japanese Buddhist take on the world without

overtly indulging in taking sides in the American controversy.

It' a tribute to his depth of understanding that in spite of

this lack of partisanship, this splendid book has something to

teach us all and some light to shed on the American debate.

It would oversimplify LaFleur's arguement to sum it up, but one

thread is something like this. The Japanese view of a newborn

is that it is a potential life. This view is even more emphatic

in the case of an unborn-a foetus. People become people in

this view by a gradual process of socialization.

Rather than being heartless, this way of looking at things has

a great deal to recommend it-especially in days when infant

mortality was high. Parents who lost a new-born or an unborn

child could pray for the return of that child in a subsequent

pregnancy. The ritual system, which provided no funeral for

one who died so young, affirmed the tentative nature of the

dead one's membership in the human community.

If it takes socialization to make a human and a family to make

socialization, then it is also up to the community and the

family to decide if that's going to happen at all. In this

view, life in infancy is a liquid that hardens into indiv-

iduality with time.

So infant death and miscarriage are sad, but not final. The

unborn child gets to come around again, maybe with better karma.

This, of course, removes abortion from the realm of murder/

choice. It also forces all of us to see our various positons

in the American debate as products of our social and religious

assumptions just as the Japanese view is the product of theirs.

Again, this is not a book about the American abortion wars.

It is instead, a splendid book about Japanese religious beliefs

across a swath of history and how they affect attitudes. By

staying true to his topic, LaFleur teaches us a great deal.

Not just a book about Japan...

William R. LaFleur gives us a book which is well made. Piece by piece Mr. LaFleur goes over the history of abortion, buddhism, family planning, sexuality attitudes and even woman's lib in Japan. By the time he reaches his conclusion, you can't help but feel like you, yourself, have also researched and processed all the information.
Near the end, when he compares the Japanese ideas to American ideas on the issue, you can't help but feel that maybe it was all a well placed trap, to get you to look at the whole mess from a different point of view, not just the pro-life/pro-choice, good/bad, yes/no, on/off American way (where every issue only has two sides and the winner gets total victory, so no mercy!)
You might not like some of the points made, but it will sure force you to think.

An Excellent Book, Well Written and Well Researched

I can heartily recommend this book. I once took a course taught by LaFleur which was one of the best courses on understanding Japanese Buddhism and the practice of abortion. This book matches his good lecturing style.
What is interesting is that in the West abortion is viewed in primarily negative terms, as is infanticide. LaFleur's initial attitude was: How can Japanese engage in this kind of activity on such a large scale? What role does belief in reincarnation (according to Buddhism) play?
Rather than bringing in Western moral preconceptions that might prejudge his discussion, LaFleur treats this sensitive topic with great insight and sensitivity. This book will be a very interesting read for those interested in Japanese society and Buddhism.

I have for some time wondered how to combine my two main interests in life, exercise and cats. This book has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities. You may need to slowly fatten your cat up as you get stronger with these workouts to add some resistance, or get another cat for more of a dumbbell work out, and if the worst happens there is always the "Dead Cat Lift"...
