Great character-oriented writing

The Xenogenesis series (beginning with Dawn) is about a race of aliens who survive and grow by breeding with other races, and humans are next. I love how personal the author makes this story. It's a really BIG idea, but she makes it about individuals. Very nice character-oriented writing.

Would you like to determine your own motivation / leadership style? Are you task-oriented or people-oriented? Although I have not used the entire book, Chapter 12 of this book presents several self-assessment surveys based on McGregor's Theory-X / Theory-Y, McClelland's Achievement-Power-Affiliation, and Herzberg's Motivators-Hygienics models. Chapter 10 has a self-assessment survey based on Likert's System (Authoritarian-Benevolent Authoritarian-Consultative-Participative). Very useful.

This book is a valuable addition to understanding Lennie’s ideas. As a teacher I’ve been a long time believer in “copying” (singing) as opposed to the current fashion of transcribing and analyzing solos and appreciate your reinforcement of my own beliefs. Your analysis of the efficacy of the process was revelatory.

John Klopotowski achieve's two highly important objectives with this memoir: shining light on life of one jazz's unsung heroes (Warne Marsh) as well as laying out a thorough presentation of the pedagogical precepts of the school of improvisation that Warne belonged to (the Tristano School). It is presented from the viewpoint of a knowing insider since John not only studied under Warne, but befriended him and played with him. John's writing presents a personal Warne, complete with personality, wit, and personal philosophies about music and art.

As if this was not enough, this may be the only book that has fully documented the teaching method of Lenny Tristano, the famous pedagogue who was known as the leader of the "cool" school of improvisation during the heyday of bebop. One can, with proper discipline, use this book as a method book to teach oneself how to improvise in the Tristano style.

An excellent read for both players and listeners

This book is essential reading for fans of the Tristano school. An excellent read for both players and listeners. John's first hand account of lessons with Warne gave me new perspective in to what it must have been like to actually study with Lennie Tristano. I would recommend this book to all curious improvisors. Both beginners and masters of their instruments will have something to gain here.

Thank you John for a wonderful and much needed look in to the world of Warne Marsh.
