Gives a Religious Slant to Christmas Symbols

Many of the symbols that accompany Christmas actually come from Pagan or pre Christian Celebrations. However, this book takes the symbols and gives a Christian based explanation for them.

This book uses construction paper illustrations, which are bright and well done, to enhance the explanations. The book is targeted for young children and both the illustrations and the wording would be appropriate for young elementary students.

If you would like a Christian explanation for all of the symbols this is the book for you. If you are looking for where many of out Christmas customs actually come from, you might want to continue looking.

I love this book.

I started looking for comfort in different books this time of year.Christmas has always been my holiday. I love everything about it. But last year that changed a little. My mom died just 10 days before Christmas . So this year was going to be hard for the family. Then 2 weeks ago we found out that my mother-in-law was not was not going to have another Christmas with us. So I"m looking for answers and comfort. This book helped me to see that Jesus in is still with us and loves us. You have to look for Christ in all things. This year will still be hard but I know Jesus loves me and will see me threw this. Then end of this book tells you God gave his only son that who ever believed

Best book on the subject I've read!

I've read a lot about financial math (I'm a physicist and love mathematics). This book is a gift. Just the tips (and code) on using Mathematica to process the data are worth the price alone. I don't buy into the Efficient Market Hypothesis and this book delivers (section 8.2) on fast markets. He correctly looks at the cash balance, something most folks gloss over, and sets up the various symbolic and numerical solutions in a useful way. The language is a bit terse and the structure drove me nuts until I got into the swing of the rhythm of the flow. I am grateful for the language now - we get a detailed look into the mind of someone who just plain KNOWS this subject. The fact you get the whole book as a series of Mathematica notebooks which are executible is a real plus. A few quick changes to the code and you have YOUR problem well on the way to solution. It is practical, explicitly direct, charmingly theoretical and powerfully presented. The only problem is I want a second volume and I want it NOW!

Tough book but very useful

This book is merciless; very complex, very dense. It is also, however, extremely useful. If Stojanovic were to publish ten more books on the topic, he would probably revolutionize the use of Mathematica in finance. The enclosed CD was also useful; such things are usually worthless but in this case, the book contains so much code that it would not be practical to implement without a digital copy.

The book is certainly a bargain at $70.

Its a tough read, but well worth it, most of the work is origional or is an origional take on what has been done before. A bit like what Hamilitonian mechanics is to Newtonian mechanics

The Caliphate Question combines the disciplines of theology, history, and international relations in order to approach the complex and sensitive issue of how Western governments―in this case the British―have historically engaged with foreign policy issues that have centered around questions of theology or faith. The British government's approach to policy-making in the field of Islamic governance from the First World War through to the early Cold War is the case study for this book, both because of the extensive documentation that exists on the period and because of its relevance to the current geo-political world.

While the book is not a critique of current British foreign policy, it does seek to furnish policy-makers and commentators with a framework within which such increasingly necessary policy-making can be created.

What is the caliphate?

"The Caliphate Question" by Sean Oliver-Dee" (2009), Lexington Books, 235 pgs. The author is "associate research fellow at the London School of Theology, associate researcher for the Church of England's Representative to the EU Institutions, and fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society." The author has written a very unbiased, rather neutral look at the origins of the theme of the Islamic caliphate. Regarding the establishment of a caliph (successor to the Muslim prophet Muhammed)s, the author notes that there are only two or three references to this concept in the Koran/Quran. What I found very useful in this book is that the author probed the thoughts of 9 different translators of the Quran in search for their interpretations of not just the word "khalifah" in the Quran, but the entire Sura 4: 59 (Appendix B: Table of Translations Q4:59) [pgs. 103-194]. The translators include: Sale, Rodwell, Arberry, Dawood, Al-Hilali, Yusuf Ali, Palmer, Asad, and Shakir. I won't go into details about these different translations, nor how the author views the political and theological importance of these differences, but I'll just say that for anyone studying this topic I strongly recommend this book. Besides his analysis of the Sunni versus Shia dispute over which sectarian division that the caliphate should have gone, the author also discusses how various British governments viewed the powers (spiritual vs. governmental) and the political usefulness in keeping the caliphate-position around after World War I. The author also discusses how the British evaluated as to who should be the `true' caliph: the emerging king of Nejd-Hejaz (Abdul Aziz bin Saud), or the king of Egypt, or the Ottoman emperor, or Emir Hussein who had fled Mecca.

A great study for any small group or Sunday School class

This curriculum is refreshing because it brings you face-to-face with Christians who have been persecuted in Iraq. You can hear their stories, in their own words, and then discuss with your group what we can learn for their testimonies. I think these stories will help us learn how we should live here in the United States--especially as we face more challenges in our faith!
