John Sprack practised for a number of years as a barrister in the criminal courts. He taught Criminal Litigation at the Inns of Court School of Law (now City Law School) for 11 years, and was Director of its Bar Vocational Course and of the LLM in Criminal Litigation. He was one of the founding authors of Blackstone's Criminal Practice and now provides Continuous Professional Development courses for practising lawyers in Advocacy and Employment Law. He was an Employment Judge for 15 years.

Six steps to ward off Alzheimer's

Essential for codgers; read at Mahwah Public Library.

STEP 1: Make exercise exciting. You may know that frequent exercise—particularly aerobic exercise, which promotes blood flow to the brain—is the most effective Alzheimer’s prevention strategy. Unfortunately, many people become bored and stop exercising.

Scientific evidence: Because exercise raises levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, it promotes the growth of new brain cells and may help prevent shrinkage of the hippocampus (a part of the brain involved in memory).

Most days Kosik spends 35 minutes on an elliptical trainer, followed by some weight .training. A recent 20-year study found that dancing reduced dementia risk more than any other type of exercise—perhaps because many types of dancing (such as tango, salsa and Zumba) involve learning new steps and aerobic activity.

STEP 2: Keep your eating plan simple. Emphasize antioxidant-rich foods (such as fruit and vegetables)…not too much red meat…and a limited amount of processed foods that are high in sugar, fat or additives.

Scientific evidence: Research has shown that people who consume more than four daily servings of vegetables have a 40% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who get less than one daily serving.

Kosik tries to eat more vegetables, particularly broccoli, cauliflower and other crucifers, but doesn't like them; he adds brain-healthy spices such as rosemary and turmeric.

STEP 3: Guard your sleep. During the day, harmful waste products accumulate in the brain. These wastes, including the amyloid protein that’s linked to Alzheimer’s, are mainly eliminated at night during deep (stages 3 and 4) sleep.

Scientific evidence: In a long-term Swedish study, men who reported poor sleep were 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with better sleep.

Kosik takes 10-minute naps during the day.

STEP 4: Don’t be a loner. Having regular social interaction is strongly associated with healthy aging.

Scientific evidence: Older adults who frequently spend time with others—for example, sharing meals and volunteering—have about a 70% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who don’t socialize much.

Kosik regularly Skypes, attends conferences and stays in touch with other scientists and postdoc students. Get a pet if you can care for it.

STEP 5: Stay calm. People who are often stressed are more likely to experience brain shrinkage.

Scientific evidence: In a three-year study of people with mild cognitive impairment (a condition that often precedes Alzheimer’s), those with severe anxiety had a 135% increased risk for Alzheimer’s, compared with those who were calmer.

Kosik goes for long walks.

Others: Have a positive mental attitude, deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, meditation, watch funny movies.

STEP 6: Push yourself intellectually.

Scientific evidence: In an important study, older adults (including those with a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s) who frequently read, played board games or engaged in other mental activities were able to postpone the development of the disease by almost a decade.

But don’t fool yourself — Push your mental abilities—do math problems in your head, memorize a poem, become a tutor, etc.

Kosik does research in Latin America and is learning Spanish.

CINDERELLA RETELLING - A RELAXED READ

After living twenty-five years under the thumb of her tyrannical father, Odel wants nothing to do with being controlled by another man. She has vowed to never marry. After her father's death, her mother's best friend arrives and informs her that she is her godmother, her fairy godmother, Aunt Tildy. Tildy then sets about to teach Odel that, despite the cruel treatment she received from her father, love is a very real and special, even magical, occurrence.

I had popped onto the library website to see about requesting the newest in the Argeneau series. Right next to it, was this one, and I thought to myself, "I didn't know Lynsay Sands wrote Fairy Tale retellings." It was available as an e-book download, so I took a chance. I am so glad I did! This is an unique re-telling of the Cinderella story set in 14th century England.

This is a short, sweet, Christmas novella. I already knew I loved Ms. Sands' popular vampire series, but now I'm hoping she produces more of these Fairy Tales, as well.

Enchanting!

A delightful tale with a Christmas backdrop set in a 14th century castle full of magic. Michelle is a charming Lord not thinking of marriage while Odel is the mistreated daughter not wanting to marry at all
. Add to that a come back to life Aunt godmother with fairy dust and a magic cane trying to earn her Angel wings. Mix that all together and you have a wonderful medieval Cinderella story. Well done! Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo !!

A Cute & Charming Short Story

I read this little novella in the 'Mistletoe & Magic' anthology which was originally published in 2000. Though the kindle version states its 68 pages, the story itself began on page 9 in my paperback and ended on page 95, which would make it 86 pages long. This quick tale takes place right around Christmastime in England, 1324 and centers around Odel, a lonely young woman who after losing her father decides she never wants to be under another man's thumb ever again. Add in her fairy godmother, a little magic, and a gentle and chivalrous knight, and you've got the makings of a cute and charming romance indeed...

I thought Odel and Michelle were both kind and endearing characters. Their romance was very sweet and put a smile on my face even if it did move a bit too fast. The plot was well paced and the dialogue and happenings had me laughing out loud. Overall it was a funny and lovely fairy tale that was a fun way to spend an hour or two. There was one sex scene at the very end which was not overly explicit but detailed nonetheless. While this story didn't blow me away, it was still an enjoyable and satisfying read in the end. At $3.99 I definitely think its overpriced, but if you can get it for $1.99 or less, I'd say give it a try.

Can't say enough good thinks about this coloring book

Can't say enough good thinks about this coloring book! I bought it for my 5 year old who loves to color and color by number. The hard pictures are color by number but the easy ones are actually math problems, both addition and subtraction(nothing over about 20). Then the answer becomes the color by number. This was a great opportunity to teach him early math skills and be loved the challenge. If a child isn't ready you can always write in the answers for them to match with the colors. Wish this brand had more option since we have finished this book and can't find anything similar.

Purchased this for my 6 year old daughter. Some of the first few pages were pretty basic, but as you get further along in the book the pictures get more complicated and intricate. It is strange how the more complicated pictures get really small and only take up around half of the page, but it never seemed to bother her. She absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. Would definitely purchase again.
