A part of my collection, but not one I'll revisit.
By Robert D. Watson
I am a Wheel of Time Fanatic. I've read the series more than 7 times in total, in book form and Audiobook, and some of the early books are falling apart because I've read them more than fifteen times apiece. Suffice it to say that I'm the kind of guy who was waiting out in front of the bookstore early on a Tuesday, and could barely believe that I was the only one.
I should love the WoT Companion. But I don't.
There are some interesting entries. Cadsuane's, as well as a few other Aes Sedai entries, are well done. Some of the minor characters have a bit of an expanded history, and there are occasionally a few turns of phrase that, while anachronistic and occasionally goofy ("adventures were her bag"), tell you that this entry was largely part of Robert Jordan's notes file, not meant to be released to the public. At times, it's an interesting look behind the scenes.
And then there's the fact that really, there's almost no new information in this 800+ page behemoth. I don't honestly think it's fair to expect there to be answers to everything I've ever wondered about in the series, but I put together a list of 75 issues and/or characters that I wanted to know something more about, and out of the 75, exactly one was resolved from having read this glossary. Nakomi was "a mysterious Aiel woman whom Aviendha met in the Waste" and there is no clarity on what may have become of favorite characters after the Last Battle. Aside from a mention of Rand's pipe, nothing else is said, and there is no expanded information on anything related to the Age of Legends, Demandred (that we didn't know already) or Shara. Minor mysteries from within the series are often glossed over, and the mechanics of interesting abilities (Slayer, Androl) are not explained in any great depth. Some backstories that may have been interesting, especially in the cases of most Black and/or Red sisters, are missing. In many cases, but particularly in the case of the Forsaken, the BWB has the glossary completely beat.
It's not really for casual fans of the series, and it's not really for for me, the poster-boy of superfandom, so who is this for really? A part of my collection, but not one I'll revisit.

I was also incredibly disappointed when it came out
By Scott
Having been a WoT fan nearly my entire life and having read each book in the series, at least, 10 times, I was incredibly excited while waiting for this release. I was also incredibly disappointed when it came out. Many have commented about the content of the Companion and complained that very little new information is contained. That's not really the problem. We know the story is over and every article and interview about this before release mentioned it would be a collection of the author's notes and not expand in any way on the story. So it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that we don't find out things like the names of Matt and Tuon's children.
The real problem is the organization of the content. It is, literally, an alphabetical reference work. There is no other organization, at all. A good example is the service of Amyrlin Seats in the White Tower. Did you enjoy that Tor.com 'preview' that listed each Amyrlin, in order, since the founding of the Tower? It's not in this book that way... In order to read the same thing in the book that you read on Tor's site, you would have to ALREADY know the name and order of service for every Amyrlin ever, because they're only listed in alphabetical order, by name.
There are already much better sources of this information online, for free. Encyclopedia Wheel of Time has been available for years online and in addition to the alphabetical indexes, it also has gathered the same information together in meaningful ways, like their entire section on Prophecy. There is no Prophecy section in the published Companion. To read any prophecy, it either has to be named specifically, and so get an alphabetical entry of its own, or you have to read it as part of the character entry on the person who gave it, like Min.
The Thirteenth Depository has all of that and more, including well written and discussed articles, complete series re-reads and so much more material and information, any attempt I make to describe it would only do it an injustice. That site is a gold mine for fans of the series.
There are online concordances, PoV indexes, wikis, glossaries, and FAQs, as well as blogs full of articles, role play and discussion. All are free and all have been building in content for years and years.
So this Companion is not only poorly organized, it's also unnecessary.

Not what I expected.....
By Corrupteddragon
I've debated 2 vs 3 stars for this and settled on 2.
It's not at all what I was expecting. Now, that may be my own fault but , what I had heard described over the years was basically a super version of the previous resource "The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time". In my mind, I expected to see something in a format much like last years "World of Ice and Fire" from George RR Martin. This is definitely not those books.
It's, as others have said, a super glossary. 800 or so pages of entries and text with very few pictures tossed in (usually of the main characters and not all are even full page and all are black and white). I do take some exception to what some others have said where they have stated that this is just a compilation of the previous glossaries in the 14 books. It's definitely not. This is not something you would pick up and read unless you have read the entire series. The entries are "current" in that it includes everything from The Eye of the World right up the end of A Memory of Light. (so don't complain about spoilers if you start reading this).
For years, we had heard that they were going to include some of the original notes from Robert Jordan and all kinds of other tidbits. Maybe that was rumor and maybe plans just changed, but I haven't seen anything like that in this book. The prelude mentions that some of the entries include some of this information but none of it is clearly defined and seems to be random at best.
I would say that I'm still hoping to one day see that amazing book that I had in my mind with all new content but I realize that isn't going to happen.
They had the chance to make this the ultimate must own guide for the series that any fan of the series would enjoy. I'd say that unless you are a fanatic for this series and absolutely love to read dictionaries.....then it's a pretty disappointing "end" to a great series and most people should probably stay away unfortunately.
