About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance, earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. Dr. Besley is also a frequently requested presenter at professional conferences and is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, Dr. Besley is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

"The book is an introduction to wind power, as the title indicates. El-Sharkawi (electrical engineering, Univ. of Washington, Seattle) presents the topic from a research and an industry point of view, with a lean toward electrical engineering aspects. Early chapters focus on the history of the technology, aerodynamics, and wind statistics (together forming the first fifth of the book). In following chapters, he discusses different types of converters, generators, wind turbine systems, and grid integration. The book reads easily, and benefits from a suitable number of (mostly color) figures, numerous worked-out examples, and end-of-chapter exercises. Although numerous books on wind power are already available (some very comprehensive), this work offers a relatively concise, well-organized resource; it would be an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate-level courses on wind energy. The book will be useful to advanced students and general readers interested in learning about the fundamentals of wind power. Readers need a basic knowledge of electrical engineering (at the undergraduate level) to gain the most from the text. Summing up: Recommended. About the Author

Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi received his undergraduate education from Helwan University, Egypt, and his Ph.D from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is currently professor of electrical engineering in the energy area at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, where he has also served as the associate chair and the chairman of graduate studies and research. He has published more than 200 research articles, authored four textbooks, and co-authored three research books. An IEEE fellow, Professor El-Sharkawi has been the vice president for technical activities of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and the founding chairman of numerous IEEE task forces, working groups, and subcommittees. He holds five licensed patents related to renewable energy, VAR management, and minimum arc sequential circuit breaker switching.

Adult/High School–Kine’s searing new novel reads as if The Great Gatsby had been stripped of every trace of glamor, leaving behind only Fitzgerald’s underbelly of pessimism, substance use, and the rotted out American Dream. In Book One, narrator Arthur is reunited with his childhood friend Francis, an erstwhile poet who has given up on writing or reading. The two spend their time in a dilapidated hotel in Portland, making friends with their local heroin dealer and passes at Vita, the girlfriend of their third friend–the elusive, Gatsby-like Bill, whom Arthur has left behind in a hospital in Mexico City. In Book Two, Arthur, Francis, and Vita finally meet up with Bill, now living in New Orleans, and get involved with a small-time criminal and a scheme to bring undocumented immigrants to the States from Cuba. The unrelenting dreariness of drugs, petty crime, and unappealing sex may appeal to readers of Adam Rapp, but Kine has bigger things on his mind than Rapp’s nihilism. Though Arthur assures readers that Bill is the golden-boy hero of his story, the heart of the novel lies between Arthur’s blind gropings for meaning and Francis’s confused attempts to pull himself out of his depression. Meanwhile, Kine has some genuinely important thoughts on the drug trade and immigration hiding among the grime of his story. About the Author
Daniel Kine is author of the novels Between Nowhere and Happiness (2009, Smallhand Press) and forthcoming Up Nights (2013, Ooligan Press). He was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1984, and studied philosophy and literature in San Francisco, Mexico City, Guatemala, and Portland, Oregon. His writing has appeared in several publications, including Modern Review, Q Poetry, Pathways, and Indie Literature Now. His fiction has been described as "concerning the rootlessness of modern youth." Common themes in his novels revolve around suicide, affectlessness, drug use, and the struggles of individual freedom. He lives in London.

Dharma Bums

We want to pull away from the cold reality that is Up Nights, but we don't: we can't. Kine keeps our revulsions to the black hole that is abject poverty in check by pulling us into the characters inner thoughts and allows us to feel hope as his characters finally work out the details of their journey, this road trip that they must take together.

In this way the characters in Kine's novel, Up Nights, are not altogether different than coffee that is fire roasted here in Portland: hot, soulful and dark, and like the coffee, Up Nights is to be savored slowly, for it is here where the rich flavor of this novel is best enjoyed.

A seedy adventure through the grimy parts of life and America

Rating:

I'll be honest, I didn't expect to like this book. With the comparisons to Kerouac's work and the fact that the characters are all into drugs and other things like that I just didn't think it'd be my cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kine was able to pull me in with his monumental character work. Bravo. 5 out of 5. You should definitely think about buying this book.

Review:

I want to start by saying that those who are comparing this book to Jack Kerouac's On the Road are both accurate and inaccurate. It's fair to say that this work is analogous to that book, but only insofar as the framework goes. The guts of this book are very different, for a different time where different issues need to be addressed. It's Kerouac for the "now".

This book, unlike On the Road, does not require you to be able to adapt to the odd style of the author; Daniel Kine's prose is easy to understand and follow, even if it is a little bit basic. Where Kine shines as a writer is in his ability to highlight some interesting visual details and in his character building. I usually don't like druggy, scummy characters in my books even if the idea is to see them through the lens of poverty or whatever, but Kine does such a great job of adding dimension to the characters that you can't help but become invested in them. That's not to say that all of the characters are equally fleshed out or that you'll become attached to all of them, but in their own ways they are all distinctive (which is something not all writers can do, sadly).

This book is a conundrum; it's arresting and beautiful on the one hand, but it's seedy and dark with little room for redemption on the other hand. It's worth your time and your consideration, though, that's for sure.

A Road Novel for the Turn of the Century

Daniel Kine's book is a story that attempts to unravel what it's like coming of age around the turn of the millennium and realizing that all the opportunity we've been told is out there might not really exist. The characters take a journey from town to town in something of a fever dream as they experiment with experiences that straddle the line in their character between growing into adulthood and growing out of childhood illusions about the world.

The tone varies between cold detachment, wry humor, and a simmering unease or anger that an entire generation of young folks can't quite put their finger on. Feeling somewhat autobiographical, I'm willing to bet that this book is in some ways Daniel's own attempt to figure out an identity as a modern American adult. It hashes out the pros and cons of giving in to sets of values and ways of living that aren't your own or allowing one's self to drop out and just seek comfort and escape. The scary part is, that permanent escape may not exist.

This book is not for the faint of heart but is a worthy read for anyone out there trying to make their way in a world changing as rapidly as they are.

This is seriously one of the greatest books I've ever read! It's so hard to put this book down once u pick it up.. I'm never disappointed with books that I read from this author! She's nothing short of amazing!! So grab this book, you won't regret it! Besides, We all have a wild side right?!

Game Changer!

20,000 Steps by Charity Grant

Charity Grant has written a mind-bogglingly simple guide which will change the way you look at walking and step counters. Apparently the Fitbit frenzy bypassed me. According to this well researched guide, the average person should log in a minimum of 10, 000 or more steps a day, but for weight loss they should increase this total to 20,000 steps. Trust me, I was far below average, but I knew I had to make some serious changes. After a recent, unexpected death in my family, I made a conscious decision to try to live healthier. For far too many years I used my age, fatigue and ailments as an excuse and a pass to be lazy, avoiding exercise like the Ebola virus. I happened across an ad for Fitbit… I ignored it. A few hours later I saw a link to this book and I could not ignore the coincidence. So, I read the book. It was a game changer for me. I loved the easy flow, conversation style writing technique of the book. I also liked the research studies and science the author cited to back-up her 20 step program to log in 20,000 steps per day. This book made me stop looking at walking as exercise. No more excuses for me… I’m getting a step counter. This was a great KU read!

Getting your steps in!

I admit - I don't fit time in for exercise. It's hard going to the gym when you have a 3-year-old. Well, at least, that's my excuse. But, I can do steps, right? I never thought about how many steps a day I take, until I started reading this book. This book provides easy changes to add steps to your day. While 10,000 steps a day are recommended, weight loss gurus recommend at least 20,000 steps to help you shed the pounds. This well-researched book gave me a lot to think about. It also gave some practical ways to get the steps in like circling the kitchen (why not walk around while waiting for dinner to get out of the microwave or oven?). There's a bunch of other great ideas to get the steps in, like walking through your favorite sitcom, parking further away, doing charity walks, etc. This book already has me searching for a good step-counter. I really enjoyed the author's writing style. Not only was it informative but an enjoyable read!

There were a ton of great tips in this book. I knew there had to be a way to hit 20,000 steps each day, but this book showed me that not only was it possible, but also how a few changes and additional things added to your daily routine can really add on the steps, and a few of the tips were things I didn't really even think about. And also one more thing... Besides this book giving a load of tips that will surely get you to 20,000 steps and beyond, some of these tips also bring more peace to your life. Like when you finally drill into your head that parking further away from your destination no matter where you are will add the extra steps, it allows you to not even worry about getting "the best/closest spot you can" all the time. You can be at peace and pull into any spot, even the first one you see, because it doesn't matter how far away you are. In fact, it only helps you reach your goal faster.

I bought this book for a class I was in at the Art Institute of California. It was the required text and had everything I needed to learn inside. Since the class, I have still used this book to continue my education on Wine, Beer and Spirits. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in beverages. The book arrived on time and was in perfect brand new condition. Buy this book! you will not be disappointed.

I bought this for a course I was going to take but events led me to changing my schedule and now I am still waiting to really use it. I have, however, skimmed it and it seems like a very good book to start off with if you want to get to know that basics about wines and spirits.
