This is a wonderful introduction to the joyous world of Brother Cadfael, 12th century monk and amateur sleuth.
The second book, especially is a solid beginning of the Cadfael journey. It is my all time favourite.
Stunningly written it is a gentle clever read without any of the gratuitous violence, sex and nastiness so prevalent in most novels.
Books for adult, teenager and child alike.

"The Benediction of Brother Cadfael" is a wonderful introduction for anyone unfamiliar with the murder-solving "Brother Herbalist" of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shrewsbury. It also makes a wonderful gift for those already in love with the good brother.
This oversized volume contains the complete text of the first two "Brother Cadfael" novels, seperated by a lovely illustrated section discussing medieval Benedictine life, Shrewsbury, the Welsh border, St. Winifrid, the Abbey (which is still in existence) and other items of interest.
Enjoy this wonderful book. A solid four stars.

Race Music is a wonderful example of music scholarship. Ramsey's work provides a rigourous, fresh, and inciteful look into African American Music. Unlike many music scholars who unsuccessfully negotiate the academic and popualar terrains simultaneously, Ramsey presents an unflinchingly academic book in a way that allows the lay public access into his wonderful world of idas. A must read!!!!

I, personally, find this book as THE reference book in studying the journey of our music through different eras. You cannot find a more comprehensive in-depth study of the music of our soul, thoroughly executed and written, even to the point it literally takes you through the time tunnel and puts you at the very feet of the pioneers of "race music." Dr. Ramsey's book is so well-written, that musicians and music listeners alike can relate to the experiences described in various chapters. He is "on point," hitting controversial subjects regarding race music "head-on!" A must-have in your collection! I've had my copy for over 3 years, and I'm still getting nuggets out of it!!! Gotta get your own copy - can't have mine!!! Good reading!

Ruth Wind - Where have you been all my life?

I am one of those people who never pays any attention to "category" romances - just breeze right by them--so this book was my first exposure to Ruth Wind. Boy, have I been missing out! She is a fabulous writer, with the ability to wrap a location around you, people it with believable characters, and even give you a sound track to go with it. I devoured this book in two days, with the house practically falling down around me, but I couldn't stop until I had all the answers. I loved the characters--small town, but not cliches or caricatures, and I loved Pine Bend, with it's heat and its food, it's sorrows and its secrets. I can't get enough of Pine Bend, and I can't get enough of Ruth Wind. Anyone who is getting tired of romantic suspense, or who wants something a little more in-depth and darker-edged than Krentz or Roberts, look no further.

It was a good story with unexpected endings.

It was more of a mystery than a romance. I prefer to be more emotionally drawn in than this book provided. However, someone looking for more human relationships fiction and mystery might enjoy this more than I did.

Ellie traveled to Pine Bend, Texas, to do research for a book she was writing about Mabel Beauvais. Mabel was a blues singer who disappeared twenty to thirty years earlier. Ellie was also trying to discover who her father was. She knew he was in Pine Bend when Ellie was conceived. Ellie's mother died when Ellie was six months old. The story was a little frustrating when Ellie talked to people who knew answers to her questions but refused to tell her anything. The ending was satisfying and the answers to the mysteries were good and unexpected. Although there was some underlying sadness in the story due to so many good young men dying in the Vietnam war, leaving their loved ones to live on without them.

Regarding the SPOILERS below,I am not giving away answers to the main mysteries.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Ellie and Blue fell in love. The problem for them was that everyone Blue had loved had died on him, so he was reluctant to love again. Why he changed his mind at the end of the book and decided to be with her and not fear losing her was not clear enough for me.

I was also confused with a few scenes throughout the book titled "The Lovers." When reading them I wasn't sure if they were a dreams of Ellie or Blue or were flashbacks to events in the lives of Mabel or Ellie's mother. At the end of the book I concluded they were of Ellie's parents, but I would have preferred knowing this earlier when reading them.

I loved reading Courting Her Rebel: (Taken by Cowboys: Part 2) A Billionaire Western Romance, all about Spencer & Nate the co-owners & business partners of Guest Ranch & Jessica a NYC girl looking for relaxation away from the hustle & bustle of city life. In part 1 she has an instant attraction to Spencer. In part 2 she's still very attracted to Spencer but is also very attracted to Nate! The author wrote an amazing story that is spanning thru all five parts, and the characters are bringing the story to life. Nate is very attracted to Jessica and is jealous of Spencer, and wants her bad! Read this book it will make you laugh, sigh, shake your head and cum! Enjoy reading about Guest Ranch. I can't wait to read part three. Come and read about the hot Cowboys at Guest Ranch, you won't be disappointed, I know I wasn't!

Not a biography of Marie-Antoinette

This book doesn't read like a biography of the Queen at all. I enjoyed it nonetheless, but I don't feel like I know a whole lot about marie-antoinette now. I feel like I know more about France and what happened to France at that point in time. Even though I like finding out about the political situation at one point in the book I realised it was too detailed in telling the reader what was happening regarding the Estates General and how it changed and progresses. I know it is essential to tell what was happening in France while telling her story, but my feeling is that the background info about France was the leading topic of the book and the book should be re-titled. In some parts however the author was really skimpy on detail and for example in the case of the diamond necklace if I hadn't have watched the movie about the necklace I wouldn't have been able to follow and understand the events in the book. In other words, you almost needed some background info yourself before you read it.

My curiousity about Marie-Antoinette and her life first came about in high school, when my French teacher would tell us about the French queen's "Petit Trianon" and her "hameau" at Versailles. When I visited these places on a trip to France, I became even more intrigued. But not until I read this book did history truly come alive for me. But in this book, I not only learned about the real person -- who had some very bad qualities, such as selfishness and an inability to understand that her choices brought consequences, but also some good qualities, such as her dignity and regal bearing during her last days and her last moments -- but I also learned a great deal about French society and royal life during the queen's day. For instance: Did you know that the public could watch the queen give birth to her first child, so that there would be plenty of impartial witnesses to verify that this indeed was a child of royal birth? This very readable book is a great peek into an important moment of history.

The new Marie Antoinette

A new biography of Marie Antoinette. There is something of a yawn here. Uness you're new to this old story of woe, you're sure to find here nothing new. The exhausted dramatis personae soon emerge and take their cues as in those archaic dramas by Corneille. Tired old characters: Marie Theresa, Mercy, Campan, DuBarry, Lamballe, Artois, Fersen, Vaudeuil, la Motte, Rohan, etc. Soon rally about the new inept royal couple and quickly tear them apart. I actually recommend this new biography of the doomed Austrian archduchess who became Queen of France in 1774. Although scholastic this new version has something of Jean Pleidy in it. Mostly simply because the historical reality is so intensely melodramatic. Evelyne Lever draws the life of this enigmatic and super vilified woman with certainty but without the vital background information given by Andre Castelot. Neither she has the brilliance and posseses the supreme compassion articulated by Stefan Sweig. A book I recommed to those interested in the subject is 'The Wicked Queen' by Chantal Thomas. An account of the disguting depravity and horror, indirectly propelled by Marie Antoinette's chronic shot-sightness. What remains as yet depicted is the woman herself. Marie Antoinette is an enigma. And thus she smiles wanly from many a bookcase. No writer will be able to reveal the woman herself. Who like Hecuba sat humiliated inside the Conciergerie; waiting to die. Or the desperate mother whose's son was torn from her arms at the Temple. Vilified and spat upon as she so tragically returned to Paris from Varennes, in a living nightmare. Or like Penelope, whom in those perilious mornings at the Tuilleries, astutely grinned at revolutionaries, then at night screamed for help in code. Or the queen, who under a new mauve parasol in organza, paced sighing about the gardens of Trianon, her heart suddenly beating faster at the sight of the comtesse de Polignac. Marie Antoinette lives forever.

About the Author
Subhuti joined the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1973 and has since devoted himself to the practice and teaching of Buddhism. So I bought this book thinking it was going to give me some ideas on mayan or Aztec tattoos but it has almost nothing about mayan or Aztec work, just a bunch of cholo style pictures and drawings so if you want a book to get some tattoo ideas that have to do with Aztec or mayan please do yourself a favor and don't buy this book!!!!!

About the Author
Ray C. Mullin is a former electrical instructor for the Wisconsin Schools of Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education. Prior to his retirement, he served as district manager, regional manager, regional vice president, and ultimately director technical liaison for a major electrical manufacturer. He also served on the NFPA Code Making Panel 4 of the National Electrical Code. A former journeyman and supervisor for residential, commercial, and industrial installations, he has taught electrical apprentice and journeyman courses, conducted numerous technical and Code seminars, written many articles for electrical trade publications, and consulted for electrical equipment manufacturers on legal issues. A former member of the Executive Board of the Western Section of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and National Fire Protection Association, Electrical Section. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Colorado State University.

This book has made a straight forward topic unnecessarily confusing and time consuming

This book has made a straight forward topic unnecessarily confusing and time consuming. There's lots of information that's organized well. It’s a great reference guide for any electrical work that you plan to do. It also will give practice examples, including a practice and example blue print. Also test quiz at the end of each chapter. All you need in one book.

An Amazing Book!

I have the Black & Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring but it was published in 2002. I saw the new third edition was published in 2005. I like the Black & Decker Complete Guide Books because they have amazing illustrations. They educate you just enough for you to realize that you need a much better book. I wanted an extremely comprehensive book that included the new 2008 national electrical code. My search led me to this book.
This is a text book. A different reviewer wrote that this was not a reference book. I disagree. The purpose of a text book is to thoroughly educate a novice on a specific topic. This book is extremely informative. I purchased the paperback edition. This book is well worth the money. This is the book that you want to buy. Your search is over.

Great Book for Electrical Projects

I have recently completed rewiring a cabin and a old house in the Twin Cities area. My projects were probably a little more complex than some as they involved installing new service entrances and new panels. More importantly they involved getting an electrical permit, which meant visits from the local electrical inspector. For this reason I did a lot of reading. One of the books I read was the this book. I really liked it because of the detailed code information many books left out or assumed you already knew. Written as a textbook for students in the electrical trade it covers things like outlet spacing, number of circuits required in a kitchen, size of conductors for service entrances, box fill violations ect. The great thing about Mullin's approach is he covers a house room by room with what the code requires with references. The actual National Electrical Code is not well organized and you would spend a lot of time trying to find what you need. By applying Mullin's book to my work, all of my projects passed inspection the first time around! I agree with other reviewers that it does not cover some wiring skills things like fishing wires through old houses or how to wire an outlet or switch. For this reason, I have three other suggestions:

"Wiring a House" by Rex Cauldwell. This was a good book for learning how to plan out the wiring for my projects, it has excellent photographs and how to information. I especially like his "above code" suggestions for making your wiring more useful and safer.

Another suggestion is the Black and Decker Wiring book, it is very good at showing the basics of wiring and has good color photographs. I think it is much better than the Home Depot book.

There is also a handy little book (and cheap!) called "Step by Step Guidebook on Home Wiring Diagrams" by Ray McReynolds. It is a small orange book I found at Home Depot and have seen at other home improvement stores. This book is not flashy and is easily overlooked or dismissed, it just has black and white drawings of wiring diagrams for just about every wiring situation a homeowner could get into, like three way and 4 way switches, outlets, lights ect. This book also shows different ways to wire all these devices, such as when the power comes in at the switch or comes in at the light ect.

The bottom line, if you are doing any complex wiring in your home and want to be code compliant this is a good book for you. If you are just looking for how to wire switches and outlets, buy the Black and Decker book and the little home wiring diagram book. Happy Wiring!
