Torment Saint: The Life of Elliott Smith, by William Todd Schultz

Elliott Smith was one of the most gifted songwriters of the '90s, adored by fans for his subtly melancholic words and melodies. He died violently in LA in 2003, under what some believe to be questionable circumstances, of stab wounds to the chest. By this time fame had found him, and record-buyers who shared the listening experience felt he spoke directly to them from beyond: astute, damaged, lovelorn, fighting until he could fight no more. And yet Smith remained unknowable. In Torment Saint, William Todd Schultz gives us the definitive biography of the rock star, imbued with affection, authority, sensitivity, and long-awaited clarity.

Torment Saint draws on Schultz's careful, deeply knowledgeable readings and insights, as well as on more than 150 hours of interviews with close friends from Texas to Los Angeles, lovers, bandmates, music peers, managers, label owners, and recording engineers and producers. This book unravels the remaining mysteries of Smith's life and his shocking, too early end. It's an indispensable examination of his life and legacy.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this detailed biography of Elliott Smith, the gifted singer-songwriter who was beloved by the indie-rock world and praised for solo albums such as Either/Or, Schultz opens a window on the musician who died from a fatal stab wound in 2003 at age 34. Schultz—editor of the Handbook of Psychobiography and author of books on Truman Capote and Diane Arbus—brings to his work a deep understanding of how inner and outer landscapes can affect unique and sensitive artists. Schultz follows the uncanny intersection of the lives of Smith and fellow Pacific Northwest rocker Kurt Cobain: both witnessed domestic violence and divorce during their childhoods, with resulting feelings of abandonment and loss of security showing up regularly in songs; both suffered from lifelong bouts of depression; both hung out in Portland bars where the prevailing mid-1980s zeitgeist included punk, indie, anything-goes aesthetics; and both used hard drugs such as heroin. But no matter how dark Smith's story gets, Schultz never loses sight of the beauty of his music. Agent: Betsy Lerner, Dunow, Carlson & Lerner. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Elliott Smith is what some call a cult artist. He achieved mainstream fame of sorts when he was nominated for an Academy Award for his song “Miss Misery,” from the film Good Will Hunting, but he has mostly lived his life on the edge in Portland, Oregon. Smith suffered from depression and alcohol and drug addiction, and these topics appear frequently in his music. Schultz’s thorough biography examines Smith’s difficult childhood, his years in numerous bands, and his solo career. He offers thoughtful observations on Smith’s songs, which are notable for their profound melancholy and deep sadness. Before his death in 2003 from a stab wound to his heart, which occurred under mysterious circumstances, Smith was working on a double album. Schultz describes his music as “extraordinarily accomplished,” and Smith himself as sweet and compassionate. “Elliott was very deeply loved by many, many people,” writes Schultz. “The largest mystery of all is why he so often could not believe that.” Fans of Smith’s ethereal music will appreciate this book, published on the tenth anniversary of his untimely death. --June Sawyers

From Bookforum
In Torment Saint, William Todd Schultz has written his own kind of love song—an account of Smith’s life that does full justice to his memory and the impressive legacy of his art. Schultz makes good on the promise of his subtitle by focusing on the life of Elliot Smith—largely ignoring the cottage industry of lurid speculation about the circumstances of the songwriter’s violent death in 2003. He doesn’t dwell unduly on his subject’s depression, his darkness, or his inability to recognize his own talent and innate goodness. Those traits were, of course, integral to Elliott’s personality, but they aren’t the final word on his life, and so Torment Saint is both a persuasive reckoning with Elliott’s inner demons and –much more important—a full appreciation, and celebration, of his undeniable genius. —Rhett Miller

A solid swing but a tragic miss
By brightnight
It seems to me that there are a lot of slanted reviews on here for this book so I'm going to preface mine by admitting that I have no connection to Elliott Smith other than simply being a big fan. And to be fair, I've been a fan since about 1998 and I love his music but that's my only connection to the musician himself. I've no connection to anyone in his life, his circle, his family or to the author. So for what it's worth, this review is coming from a fan of the music and that's where my interests begin and end.

My first impression of this book was the unbearable way Elliott's lyrics were woven into the narrative of the book. Others have mentioned it and it's the most obvious flaw. And unfortunately the one that makes the book tough to take seriously regularly throughout the entirety of it....all the way down to the last chapter.

A pretty typical example:

"Figure 8 also unpacks a conspicuous army-related theme, the generals, sergeants, non-commissioned officers all showing up at different junctures. A sergeant, for instance, breaks the key off in a lock in "Color Bars," pinning Elliott in the place he comes from. Veiled suicide references appear as everyone wants Elliott to ride into the sunset but he battles back, for the moment, declaring, 'I ain't gonna go down," a phrase he was drawn to as a symbol of giving up and losing all hope..." and continues later on with, "He's an army man, ordered to march where he stands, as a "dead enemy" springs and wails in his face."

This type of narrative, literally interpreting Elliott's lyrics and weaving them into the story, continues throughout the book and is, at times, unbearable and very much cringeworthy at times.

We're told by Elliott himself in his many interviews that the lyrics are mostly metaphors and little stories, not autobiographical (even the book mentions this through a few Elliott quotes) yet the author does his best to literally interpret those and directly apply them to Elliott's life, the situations he was dealing with and the people in his life. And many times, it's not just a stretch, it's downright laughable. And it's a shame.

The comparisons to Kurt Cobain are a bit of a stretch...any fan of Elliott would tell you that, yet there is a fairly substantial amount of time spent discussing the two.

Another obvious questionable part: If you believe the author and his sources, much of Elliott's lyrics were written by a friend from his high school years, back when he was 15:

"A little known fact about Roman Candle - indeed, about all of Elliott's albums up to and including small sections of 2000's Figure 8 - is that high school friend Garrick Duckler's lyrics continued to make regular appearances....sometimes the words weren't even (Elliott's); if they were anyone's diary, they were Duckler's....In total, Duckler estimates that somewhere around two to four lines of his (lyrics) resurface in roughly every other song of Elliott's up to around the year 2000.

So again, the author is attempting to interpret Elliott's lyrics and ascribe them to his life while at the same time we're led to believe that, at least up until 2000, they're so impersonal that Elliott didn't even write many of those lyrics himself.

Sounds farfetched but I think the main thing to consider is that the author spoke with only the people who were willing to speak to him. And, in using that approach, he spoke to many of the wrong people: Those looking to take credit for some of Elliott's success, ex-girlfriends with axes to grind, people who had known him long before he became the person that his fans grew to know. And that's a fatal flaw in trying to piece together an image of someone who is no longer with us.

For instance, the author also seems to have an issue with a woman named Valerie, an ex-girlfriend of Elliott. The author mentions that he tried to connect with her in writing the book and that possibly she wasn't interested in talking. There are many situations in the books where she is used as a target and portrayed as a bad person or influence on Elliott. I feel like that backfired because in the end, it was obvious that there were personal issues here at play, a glaring reminder that this book is a collection of opinions more than anything else with a specific message to promote.

The last part of the book is focused (nay, dedicated) to defending Jennifer Chiba as not having a role in Elliott's untimely death. And that really spoke volumes in terms of where the entire book seemed to be suspiciously headed. So a questionable end to a mediocre book, unfortunately. And when I closed the back cover, it struck me...this was a book written about Elliott by someone who didn't even appear to be a fan. And certainly a true fan wouldn't have put together a narrative like this.

Afterward, I mostly just felt sorry for Elliott's parents, family and real friends. Elliott is spoken about by the author like he's some THING rather than a person. Elliott was a son, a brother, a best friend. And that's the most unfortunate part to feel as an outsider. Certainly if he were still alive, I imagine this book would represent everything he was against and, as a fan, it's tough to stomach the idea that I waded through it and then came to that conclusion.

Ultimately, so much of the book is taken from interviews that you can read elsewhere on the internet: youtube, etc. I think those are the most interesting parts of the book and they're available readily online. And that's kind of the thing here: If you really want to piece together an accurate image of Elliott's life, base that on the words from the man himself, not on an unauthorized biography.

At some point, we, as fans, need to step back and quash the curiosity because it's encouraging projects that like that try to peer into places that really should be forgotten, full of interviews with people who were disconnected from Elliott for years, people with specific agendas and the wrong list of folks.

The music was always the message anyway...it spoke for itself. Elliott said in his own words it's for the listener to put together and decide what they're about. If you respect Elliott as a musician and human, then it's fair enough to end it on that note.

A devoted but flawed biography.
By Douglas P.
William Todd Schultz biography of Elliott Smith is not particularly definitive, though it at least attempts to fill an obvious void in well-researched accounts of his life; many readers having been unsated by Benjamin Nugent's previous attempt that seemed rushed to publication shortly after Smith's death. One of the key strengths of this book is its supremely fine focus on Smith's early years growing up in Dallas, followed by the move to Portland and his time with Heatmiser. The detail and insight in this first half of the book is captivating, with regard to both the development of the man and his music.

The only drawback in this first half, one which occurs throughout the book, is Schultz's use of lyric snippets from Smith's songs to garnish some particular moment, explicitly referencing which song that lyrics derives from every time this device is employed. This tactic, used far too frequently to retain any charm, quickly begins to grate and distract from the text.

The second half of the book, starting around the release of the self titled album, meditates on that album's preoccupation with heroin by someone who at that point was not a user. This is an intriguing observation, but it also marks the starting point of a narrative shift. The complexity of the subject slowly begins to dilute into that of a tortured genius gradually plummeting towards death. Who constructs this narrative? Schultz is the author, but he is not entirely responsible for this. For one, what Schultz has at his disposal is ultimately sparse. All he can rely is the music, published interviews, and oral histories from friends and collaborators, and then only those willing to share. Several members of Smith's family and other intimate relations did not talk to Schultz and it is doubtful they will ever talk to anyone about him on record. It is also not much of an exaggeration to say that Smith crafted or bought into this narrative himself, and began to mold himself around it. This has the potential to inhibit and sabotage objective or open attempts at biography.

It is not impossible, though, to subvert the "tortured artist" narrative, whether Smith purposefully adhered to it or not. The best biographies aspire to and sometimes succeed in holding the subject in question, in order to uproot mythos and to create the most fully realized representation possible. Edmund White's biography of Jean Genet and Jon Lee Anderson's biography of Che Guevara come to mind. Schultz, his background in psychology, would seem more apt than any rock historian to attempt such a feat, but that does not come to pass here.

Smith transforms in Schlutz's book from tortured genius to junkie savant, becoming more and more a flat character, the book petering out into speculation for ten or so pages about the nature of his death. Though the question is pertinent, Schultz adamant and drawn out conclusion of suicide cloyingly reiterates Smith's lifelong despondency and diverges into apologia for Jennifer Chiba, who in the end is significant to Elliott's life, though these last pages in the book hardly deal with Elliott at all. He is talking about a death scenario, a woman caught in its devastating aftermath, and a knife. The knife serving as a maudlin if not insulting metaphor of an existential wound, because the metaphor nearly negates the importance of the music, oversimplifies the man, and dampens what could have been a potentially great biography. Smith's narrative is simply hard to navigate in and of itself, one that may never be fully uncovered, but what the budding lineage of his biographies indicate is that the possibility for illuminating interpretations is there. Schultz's addition is flawed but devoted, a cracked light bulb.

A Diary That Went Public
By Sandy Frazier
Unlike the recent documentary, Torment Saint brings Elliott Smith into focus as a true American artist who made music simply because he loved music and was passionately moved by the musicians he admired. I've read a lot of biographies in my life, but with the advent of YouTube at my disposal, reading these words while at the same time being able to listen to and watch all the performances and songs was exciting and inspiring. As a musician, myself, I understood the passion Elliott had for recording right from the start... his urgency to tape everything that popped into his head while the concept was still fresh and alive... the scuffling about - so young - from Radio Shacks to musicians' clearance houses trying to find any old equipment he could use - anything that would get the job done there and then... duplicating homemade cassettes and inserts with original art and photographs... trying to get those cassettes into the right hands.

Schultz's empathic, compassionate style is warm and heartfelt throughout; he made me smell the Portland rain and the NYC dive bars... he made me ebb and flow with Elliott's highs and lows. He introduced me to all of his friends, his family and musicians - the characters and stories that inspired his songs. He knew Elliott lived his songs and the lyrics were his life story.

Elliott lived a short life that was filled to over-flow with experiences that take most of us a lifetime to have. He was focused because he knew who he was and what he wanted to do; he knew his limitations and understood his talent and his shortcomings. Unlike most of the megastars today, he played all of his instruments and wrote, sang and performed his tracks. There was no pretending; he didn't care if he fit in, he didn't care if he was a hit. He just knew what to do, how to do it and got it done.

The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline Of Leisure, by Juliet Schor

This pathbreaking book explains why, contrary to all expectations, Americans are working harder than ever. Juliet Schor presents the astonishing news that over the past twenty years our working hours have increased by the equivalent of one month per year—a dramatic spurt that has hit everybody: men and women, professionals as well as low-paid workers. Why are we—unlike every other industrialized Western nation—repeatedly ”choosing” money over time? And what can we do to get off the treadmill?

An important, hard-hitting, well-documented look at the overworking of America, this study finds that Americans now spend more hours working than at any time since WW II. 75,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo.

From Library Journal
This is a book with an important message that unfortunately will probably not be taken seriously. Schor, a Harvard economist, argues from statistics what the rest of us know from experience, that "in the last twenty years the amount of time Americans have spent at their jobs has risen steadily." And the statistics, if accurate, are stunning. Each year our work year increases by one day. We average only 16 hours of leisure a week after jobs and household chores. Working hours are longer than they were 40 years ago. And if present trends continue by the year 2000, we will be spending as much time at our jobs as we did in the 1920s. However, as Schor notes, we are also willing victims of this erosion of leisure as we pursue promotions, bigger salaries, and conspicuous consumption. Her solution? Hold jobs to a set number of hours per week, offer comp time for any overtime, and lower our living standards. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
News accounts of the last few years have depicted the evolution of the man in the gray flannel suit into the 80-hour-per- week yuppie, and of Superwoman into a bundle of frayed nerves who finds she really can't have it all. Yet according to Schor (Economics/Harvard), her own cogent analysis of our society's ``time poverty'' is the first of its kind. Since 1948, the author reports, productivity for each US worker has more than doubled, yet work-hours have risen so sharply for the average American that, if present trends continue, hours on the job will match the level of the 1920's. In Schor's telling, workers are pulled by centrifugal forces all but mandating longer hours: exploding consumer debt, upgraded household standards, a labor-union movement that abandoned the struggle for shorter hours 50 years ago, and, above all, companies that find it advantageous to make time slaves of workers through fixed annual wages, overtime, and fringe benefits. Like many an economist, Schor apparently has never met a statistic she hasn't liked, even if its relevance is questionable (e.g., her comparing of present-day conditions with those of the preindustrial age). However, she scores telling points in noting that US manufacturing employees work 320 more hours per year than their German or French counterparts, in observing that longer hours are coinciding with high unemployment, and in puncturing the myth that Japanese workers' long hours give them a competitive leg up. Schor's proposals--standard schedules for every salaried job, payment for back time with time rather than money, pro-rationing of fringe benefits for part-time workers, government-mandated three-week paid vacations for all employees--seem worth consideration, if beyond legislative possibility at this point. A trenchant examination of why Americans find themselves in the ``squirrel cage'' of overwork. (Eighteen illustrations and tables--not seen.) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Trouble In Our Worker's Paradise!
By Barron Laycock
America is the fabled land of plenty, and according to Juliet Schor, most of us seem to be lining up for more than our share of work hours. In our unabated obsession to get more than our fair share of the virtual cornucopia of goods and services out there in the marketplace, we seem to have become collectively addicted to working more and more hours in a devil's bargain with our employers. This book is a wonderful overview of this long-term trend toward overwork, where the average American now works the equivalent of an extra month a year. Since it is cheaper to pay someone overtime than it is to hire new workers and pay the associated benefits, corporations gladly ante up to pay for our increasing presence at work. Yet this mysterious and unexpected contemporary American addiction to being on the job has its associated costs (as well as causes).
Harvard professor Juliet Schor spins a convincing and disturbing tale regarding the increasing numbers of hours we spend each week at work rather than leisure. This is a historical surprise, since most baby boomers emerged from the colleges and universities convinced we would have more leisure time and better ways to pursue our many avocational interests than any generation in the past. In this entertaining, topical, and quite readable book, the author surveys a plethora of reasons for the surprising trend toward overwork. The principal dynamic she pinpoints in influencing this trend is an economy that literally demands extra effort and time from its employees, an economy which until quite recently had a chronic shortage of available jobs and "surplus" labor pool of potential workers. Under such circumstances, anyone lacking the requisite willingness to work extra hours was indeed dispensable. Thus one becomes a careerist in an effort to survive. She also details how our culturally conditioned goal-oriented attitude toward time as a resource to be used effectively and efficiently rather than as a precious resource to be used to increase the quality of our own lives plays into the situation.
For Schor, we are on a treadmill, if not to oblivion, then to an impoverished cultural life where we are what we do occupationally rather than what we do and what we become in our leisure hours pursuing our avocations and our personal lives with family and friends. This is an important and path breaking book, one that we should find especially relevant given the fact that many of the jobs we are so seemingly addicted to will soon fade away in the new markets and new economies of the so-called "Third Wave". Anyone who has experienced "downsizing" at the hands of a large and impersonal corporation can tell you how quickly all those sacrifices and long hours are disregarded and forgotten by your employer. The emotional and economic impacts of such events can be devastating to the individual and his or her family. As a friend said to me recently, anyone who is what they do really isn't very much at all. Read and heed.

True, Yet Contrary to the American Mentality
By K. Johnson
Juliet Schor presents many balanced and interesting facts, stats, and trends in the past and present individual and collective work environment in the United States. Do most Americans realize this or even think about it?....I've met only a few who do. Since World War II worker productivity per capita has more than doubled. And, the hours worked has increased so steadily that work hours will be at the levels of what they were in the 1920s. The average American takes 12 days off per year, which is the lowest in the industrialized world. Yet Americans are in more personal debt than at any time at our history. Most today, will work into their 70s as the thing called retirement is not possible for most.
Question: is it worth it? The Puritanical work-consume-work-consume-die mentality is being questioned by some Americans, now that their investments, pensions, and 401-Ks have lost the principal to allow them to live and do what they have always been wanting to do. This book may seem contrary to the way most Americans have been raised and advised throughout their lives.
Do Americans have time to reflect, think, relax, and pursue anything to their liking? The answer depends on who you are, so ask yourself that question. This is a relevant book for a very relevant topic.

easier said than done
By Barbara R. Saunders
I disagree with the reviewer who blasts Schor's accusations against corporate America.
"Get a job you like and live within your means," he advises.
Trouble is, there's something very peculiar about the way the job market is set up. As a bachelor's degreed worker, looking for a moderate way job, I've found full-time (PLUS - emphasis on the plus) jobs at $50K and full-time jobs at $25K, but where the heck are the half-time jobs at $25K?
No where to be found.
"Face-time" requirements and inflexibility on the part of most companies thwart the moderation strategy.

Book Review by Brandilyn

3.5 of 5 Stars

For original review see The Prism Book Alliance Blog online

19 Gay Erotic Shorts. All about our men in uniform who love other men. Most of these authors are new to me, but I enjoyed seeing a little glimpse of each of their styles. Some I will seek out in the future, some I couldn’t finish in the now.

As with most anthologies there are some stories that stand out above the rest for whatever reason. Overall I give this 3.5 one-handed stars (i.e. it is pretty hot). One thing I noticed throughout much of this collection is that, unlike much of what we review here on Prism, this collection was clearly written for men. There is some crude, and utterly eye rolling, language used throughout. That being said; It was an enjoyable enough read, even for this non-male reader.

Some of the highlights and lowlights:

Weekend Leave by Shane Allison 3*
A worthy intro to the collection; it sets the tone well. A sweet little insta-love weekend tryst with a promise of more. The sex scenes were a little anti-climactic, but I enjoyed the connection between the MCs

Letter from Home by Jay Starre DNF
I hade to DNF this one. It literally made my stomach roil. The long and drawn-out, and repeated description of just what kinds of “spit” were being used for lube were just s bit too much for me. I also skipped Starre’s second entry in the book. I am not easily “grossed out,” to use the colloquial, but umm yeah. I couldn’t finish this one.

Do Ask, Do Tell by Julian Mark 3.25*
Do Ask, Do Tell was the first “one-handed read” in the collection. This is just a fun time had by the MC and various other military men he encounters along the way. This isn’t a romance; it is just a good filthy time. If you can get past the use of terms like “joy juice,” “boy juice”, and “cum cream” it is an enjoyable read.

Marine Guard by Dirk Strong 4.5*
This is my favorite of the first half of the book. It is a little M/M romance that spans either side of the repeal of DADT. The main characters are attracted to each other, but one is a Marine. As such, they dance around that attraction for a while. One night the Marine simply shows up at the other’s apartment to celebrate the repeal of DADT… naked… in bed… it is clearly the start of something and not just a hot tryst. I will certainly be looking for other titles from Mr. Strong.

So Then by Emily Moreton 3.5*
Another well written entry in the collection. I am not a huge fan of menage, and I don’t know if this was meant to be a one-off or the start of something more for these three, but it was hot enough. I enjoyed the interplay among the three main characters (even out of bed) and the fact that everything was not perfect in or out of bed. If it had been a longer format, I would like to have known a little more about Daniel’s “injury”, but other than that, no major complaints.

Liberty by Dominic Santi 4*
From the first words, I knew there was something different about Liberty from the first 7 entries in the collection. This one is set sometime in the future and focuses on a military couple who are trying to start a family. There is technology that allows them to mix the DNA of two men. It is an interesting premise, and the “Collection” scene was interesting. Again, you have to get past odd terminology like “asslips” it is a decent read.

A Voice in the Dark by Neil Plakcy 3.5*
One of the more complete stories in the collection, A Voice in the Dark pairs two POWs who happen to both be gay. Not being a military person myself, I don’t know how believable the story is, but giving a guy who hasn’t had a bath in over 2 weeks a blowjob does not sound all that sexy to me. I did have a certain amount of sympathy for the characters, however, and liked that there was a conclusion to the story, not just a hot time.

New Dog, Old Tricks by Aaron Michaels 4*
Another new to me author from whom I would be interested in reading more. New Dog, Old Tricks pairs a soon to be soldier with an existing soldier. It is basically an excuse for a hot time. Well written and enough there that it was not just a romp in bed. We knew a little about the characters first.

Ready Reserve by Logan Zachary 4*
I have heard of Logan Zachary, but have not had a chance to read any stories by this author. Ready Reserve is the story of two older reserves who come together on their two-week training exercise. Again, I don’t know how likely this story is, but it is a somewhat sweet coming together. Ready Reserve is not as hot as some of the offerings in this collection, but it is a worthy read.

Soaring by Michael Bracken 4*
Soaring is the story of a wedding made possible because of the repeal of DADT. An airman and his banker lover meet under the restrictions of DADT and have to find a way to make their relationship work. We start and end on the wedding day and look at the beginnings of the relationship in between. It was an interesting and sweet tale.

Candy Man by Gregory L Norris 3*
I am not entirely sure what to think about Candy Man. It starts with two soldiers meeting again after an unspecified time apart. I never fully understood why or how they got together, nor did I understand how or IF they wanted to be together again. The whole thing just had be off balance, I guess.

Semper Fi Wrestlers by Bearmuffin 2*
This one was pure Erotica, but not all that hot. The premise was just to see how much sex the MC could have. The POV switched among the players without warning and was hard to follow. However, what bothered me the most was the dubcon and abuse of power that was clearly in play in most of the scenes.

Comeuppance by Rob Rosen DNF
Okay so this one was annoying me, then it just got gross. I gave up on it.

The Rainbow Kerchief and the Full Moon by Jay Starre – DNS
After my experience with the first story by this author, I admit I did not even try to read this one.

The best military erotica I've ever read.
By QuixoticOrchid
Active Duty is an erotic 4th of July celebration of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Men in camouflage have always done it for me. And two or more hot, sweaty, dirty warrior types getting off and falling in love on the pages of this book for my personal entertainment --- What can I say? I like it. I like it a lot.

This was an amazing book. The stories are fun
By Natalie L. Sin
This was an amazing book. The stories are fun, touching, and balls to the wall! You will be punched in the feelings, which will make the tissues I recommend keeping nearby extra practical. Stand-outs include SHANE ALLISON, ROB ROSEN, and the ever delightful BEARMUFFIN.

Praying Thru the Tabernacle - Spanish Edition (Rezando a traves del Tabernaculo), by Jon Courson

This is the Spanish edition of "Praying Thru the Tabernacle."

"Lord, teach us to pray." The disciples of Jesus made this simple request to Him. Why? Because they realized that everything that Jesus did was the direct result of His prayer life. Is this your request too? Do you desire a more effective prayer life? Do you want increased intimacy with the Lord . . . and greater power in your service to Him? In "Praying Thru the Tabernacle," Jon Courson reveals a Biblical model of prayer that can help us achieve these desires. This model is given to us in the Old Testament picture of the Tabernacle. As Jon guides us through each part of the Tabernacle, we can truly sense Jesus answering our simple request, "Lord, teach us to pray."

Fundamental Seduction: The Jack Hyles Case, by Voyle A. Glover

This book came out in 1990 and was instantly denounced and banned. Hundreds of Independent Fundamental Baptists stood in their pulpits and denounced the author from the pulpit as being a "tool of Satan." The author received death threats and was denounced from the pulpit of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana and other pulpits in the land of Independent Fundamental Baptists. The author, an attorney and former member of the First Baptist Church, details fact after fact, including: The possible homicide of a 17 month old baby. The chief suspect? The son of a famous Baptist Preacher. This child was found to have multiple broken bones in various stages of healing prior to his death while in the home of this man, David Hyles (who would take the Fifth in the Coroner's Inquest). Multiple adulterous affairs by this son (who wrote a book entitled "Purity" while he was having some of the affairs). Pornographic pictures discovered in a briefcase tossed into a dumpster behind the church by David Hyles. The subjects? The wives of men in the church and other women in the church. The facts showing how a famous Independent Fundamental Baptist preacher sent his son to an unsuspecting church, when that preacher knew his son had serious moral failures. A pastor who brags that he has men on his staff that would commit suicide if he asked them. A church membership that displays a loyalty eerily reminiscent of the Jim Jones cult mindset. Staff members who boast that their pastor is so god-like that he does not have a dishonest drop of blood in his body. A daughter who reveals conversations she overhead between her mother, a secretary to this Baptist pastor, and the pastor, which always ended with a soft, whispered "I love you," all the while her father, a deacon of the church and close friend to the pastor, was banished to the basement by her mother. The daughter of this famous Baptist pastor who says her father's church was a cult. These are just a few of the facts in this book. The author, Voyle Glover, a lawyer and a former church member for nearly 20 years, brings all the passion of a lawyer doing closing argument to the case as he relentlessly brings out fact after fact and question after question, each of which begs to be answered. At one point, Glover examines sworn testimony given by Hyles and his alleged paramour during a deposition taken during her divorce. Testimony there revealed that the Reverend Jack Hyles had given or loaned more than $100,000 to this woman, and bought her a new car every two years. Interest in this case has attracted attention from various media sources, including the Chicago Tribune, The Times, the television show Current Affair, the Southern Baptist Conference, newspapers across the nation, radio, magazines and a host of religious publications. The book has been out of print for over 2 decades. Now, there is a demand for the book by a new generation, the children of the parents who refused to read this "trash" (as Hyles called it). This generation wants to know what their parents refused to see. They want truth. There is an even greater interest now, in light of the recent scandal brought on by the headline news that the successor pastor to the Hyles pulpit, the son-in-law, Jack Schaap, was recently (2012) arrested for transporting a minor across state lines to have sex. He pled guilty and faces a minimum of 10 years prison.

From the Author
I wrote this book in 1990. At the time, I'd just left a church I'd belonged to for nearly 20 years.  The book was about the pastor of the church, a rather famous man in the world of Independent Fundamental Baptists.

The book raised questions that should not have even existed. As a result of writing the book, I received death threats, hate mail, and since the majority of my clients were members of the church where this man was pastor, most of my client base disappeared overnight.

Since that time, the pastor has passed on, to heaven according to some, and elsewhere according to others. I leave it others to speculate on that, though I lean towards believing he's been up there with God doing some explaining, and maybe answering some of those questions I raised.

In many ways, he was a good man. There was a lot to like about the man. I liked him on a personal level. He was a man's man, and very personable, very charismatic (not in the religious sense). He had a lot of wisdom. I admit to being helped by his wisdom a number of times. And, I believe he was a generous man.

That said, there was much he did and said that was wrong. Very wrong. The book addresses some of those wrongs.

Getting a copy of this book is rather problematic. The book is out of print, so any copy you purchase is going to be used. There are no intentions at this point of reprinting the book. If ever I do, I'd have to make it an abridged version because frankly, the book was too harsh in some places. As a Christian, I am admonished to speak the truth...in love. I have no problem with the first part, but admit I failed in some parts to maintain the second part. Part of the reason, I believe, was the anger, the deep feeling of betrayal I felt.  I no longer have those feelings. Time has a way of healing wounds. And, if I were writing the book today, it would be more matter-of-fact, and some parts would be omitted.

An Opening of the Eyes
By Caron McCracken
I read this book several years ago because even as a graduate of Hyles-Anderson, I was not afraid to investigate for myself. The author was very responsible in his presentation of the facts. I had sat under much of the preaching that the author had evaluated - his analysis was fair and accurate. Its hard to recognize hard facts when you fall under the influence of a man as strong a manipulator as Dr. Hyles was, but realizing the truth is so freeing. I highly recomend this book to those who have attended this college and are ready to make Jesus Christ the sole satisfier of your soul, not an icon. Dr. Hyles called my husband and myself the greatest alumni (financial gifts)supporters (at that time) of his church. So its not like we have ever been out to harm Pastor Hyles in any way.

A Must Read if you Dare Get the Whole Story
By Dan
Attorney Voyle Glover systematically dismantles the facade surrounding the late Jack Hyles in this expose filled with first-hand testimony, evidence and observations. Glover makes a most-convincing case that something was amiss in the life and ministry of this 20th century icon of one of the most extreme branches of Christian fundamentalism. Using court documents, personal interviews and the language of an accomplished attorney, some readers will react strongly in the negative as they see the reality beyond the illusion that was Jack Hyles. While many will point to Hyles' ministry having made a positive impact on them and others, the honest reader will reach a conclusion that these good works were in spite of his character and theology, not because of them. This book requires an open mind when reading and when completed, you'll be left saddened, maddened and heart-broken for those left in the wake of this sadly misguided so-called spiritual leader.

Worth reading, but not well-written
By Tara Lohman
This is a book worth reading, especially for those who still believe to this day that Jack Hyles was a man of God, rather than the truth, which was that at some point his pride led him down the road to creating a cult that has been responsible for an unbelievable amount of abuse and damage to the lives of others. Voyle Glover was there for the glory days of First Baptist Church of Hammond and so was ideally placed to see the abuses perpetuated by Hyles, his son, and so many of those who have followed the rules and regulations of this type of church. They are responsible for the encouragement of an easy, repeat-after-me type of "salvation" that is mostly for the purpose of claiming inflated numbers of members while leaving the "convert" with no idea of what he's done, or even worse, the idea that he is just fine and "Heaven-bound" because he prayed some prayer after a desperate college student needing to claim the numbers.

Now that Jack Schaap, the son-in-law of Hyles, has fallen into disgrace, a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and trying to profit from the entire mess, writing books and articles and naming names, but Glover did it years ago, when it was new and shocking to many people and when it would hurt his business and his friendships. He bravely stepped forward to expose what he knew, and he paid the price. I don't know Glover personally, but know many who know him, and I believe he's a decent man, one with integrity. He's almost too kind to Hyles, cutting him some slack in many cases, when I believe the plain truth is that pride destroyed the man and he created a system just rotten to the core. I only attended the church's schools for a couple of years, but had family very involved in the church, and the average person cannot imagine that corruption of this system and so many other churches spawned from it.

All that being said, the book itself is a disappointment. I read it years ago when it first came out, and it's basically the same as it was, not all that much has been added. Glover is a very intelligent man and gives a good spoken interview. I am sure that in his law dealings he is very skilled. But he considers himself a writer and I'm afraid I disagree with him on that. The man so sorely needs an editor, or at least some sort of beta-reader who is not closely involved with the subject matter and isn't afraid to say, "Mr. Glover, you just said the exact same thing in this paragraph that you said in the paragraph before it." He spends the first 10% of the book telling you what he is going to say, laying out the facts while continuing to say, "I'll be telling you this," and "I'll be telling you that...." Then he does---over and over and over, repeating the facts, re-quoting what he already quoted from Hyles' sermons. He is so redundant that he could have said everything he said in a third of the book and used the rest to fill it with new information and new stories of abuses in the church---God knows there are plenty. He continually has little asides that come across as unprofessional, and gives examples that had me shaking my head and saying, "Huh?" The chapter on Brent Stephens was heartbreaking, but when he goes into the story from Brent's point of view, it's hokey and corny and made me think of John Edwards assuming the voice of the failing fetus in his million-dollar personal injury lawsuits. I much preferred the straightforward words of the investigator over Glover's overly dramatic written histrionics, sad and frustrating as the case is. So I have to say that I cannot really recommend this book as a well-written piece of work, but that does not change the basic truths that exist---Hyles was a phony who did untold damage to untold numbers of people, and unfortunately, he is still fooling people, many of them good people, long after his death.

This book is strictly informative and objective.
By Haley
This book does not take a persuasive stance one way or another, and it does not offer any real solutions to the problem. It is highly educational, though, and gives it information about the different points of view and contains several historical episodes.
